In my experience analyzing markets and trends in a quantitative role, some of the most important metrics I monitor are market share, sales growth rates, customer retention rates, and customer lifetime value. Based on my personal experience, while top line sales numbers tend to get the most attention, indicators like retention, churn, customer LTV, and market share trends often provide pivotal insights. You need to keep an eye on the complete picture. No single metric tells the whole story. I've found taking a more holistic approach has helped identify growth opportunities as well as risky downside scenarios.

For many companies, market share doesn't matter that much. There is a huge supply of potential customers who they aren't serving yet. I think targeting is much more important. As you grow, you need to think about where you're making money and what customers you want to attract. If you expand your appetite, you need to pay a lot of attention and make sure that these new customers will be profitable. For new products, you'll want to do research; but it's never enough. It may make sense to grow a bit slowly and see who you are attracting and what kind of customers they turn into. The downside is that growing slowly makes it hard to cover overhead.

We also need to take into account the shortcuts, qualitative, analytical tools provide. These tools can also serve as validation to our quantitative analysis.
