In my opinion there is no innovation related to the use of Lidars for obstacle avoidance. Actually, the other way around: though obstacle avoidance may seem a great solution at first sight, most customers end not using this feature.

In my company we've used so far 2D LiDAR for navigation but quickly run intro problems in terms of material reflectance and refraction, processing power of robotics on board computers and mounting. A much better approach (in terms of cost/effectivity) should be LiDAR usage in parallel with for example depth cameras and use fusion data packages to make for example VSlam, or at least use one or the other as backup in real scenarios where robots are expected to run continuously with the less amount of downtime possible.
