What are some of the emerging skills and competencies that you need to succeed in banquet operations?

Understanding that each event and guest is different is important. As much as we try to be proactive, we will at times need to be reactive. Keep yourself and your Team calm and roll with the changes to best execute your event.

Reading your excellent contribution, it took me back to when I just started. I was honored and blessed to have had amazing Management focused on a great Onboarding programs and continuous training programs. The name of the trainings were: Exceeding Guest Expectations, Problem Handling and Resolution, Best Practices. Banquet Operations at hotels and venues, need to invest and focus in training, it could be many small sessions which will generate a positive great impact on your "Customer Service Excellence = Guest Experience"

Massive numbers, incredible performance needed tempting to deliver into perfection. Make your team aware and show what is required. That’s how you motivate! Quest always comes first!

You must have a "plan of execution". If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Assigning responsabilities of leadership to your best performers is a way to celebrate their efforts and their great example. Best performance equals, best practices, profesional attitude (internal and external guests), teamwork (gentle and fair), great guest experience. In order to get best perfomances, everyone must be committed to excellence and continuos learning and improvement.

Love this, many operations are so busy with business.. that this might not be a focus during their time off during the High-Season. This could be a great opportunity for during the OFF-Seasons. with less events or slower season, the teams could gather and contribute towards different social causes.

Here in South Florida the banquet industry has a really intense High Season. knowing this from my own experience working as a BQTS Server, Barback, Houseman, Bartender, and Captain. As a Director of Banquet, I was more receptive to have a MONTHLY FORECAST (showed you the working days on each week for a month), for my team to plan their days off, vacation time, doctor's appts, etc. This monthly forecast was a total success, my team really appreciated this information in advance. In contrast, if you do not have a Monthly forecast, your team works blindly week after week... probably creating uncertainty on their future schedules and unable to balance their personal life around an extremelly busy High Season.
