I think the first thing to dispel is that all recognition is created equal. As team members are diverse, so are what they value as recognition or rewards. These can include an extra day off time for them to volunteer in their community, an experience etc.

Not dissimilar to asking someone, "What's your love language?", asking team members how they would like to be recognized, rewarded, and promoted is critical. There might be a creative way to assist someone that we haven't thought of, and it's only by asking that we could possibly find out this information. I once had an employee share that they would like the opportunity to have lunch with a member of the board. Superb! That's something we can make happen.
