Student feedback is probably the best way to assess the way you work. When running your own business, each student you have is your “ideal student” - meaning someone whose needs require your speciality - so their feedback is the most accurate way to tell if you are doing things right.

I create a safe and welcoming environment where they feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions. I often use anonymous surveys or one-on-one conversations to gather feedback. I ask them about the activities they enjoyed, what they found challenging, and if there are any areas where they feel I can improve. This feedback helps me understand my students' perspectives and enables me to tailor my teaching methods to their needs. Additionally, I reflect on my lessons and assess their effectiveness. Feedback is very important, both for students and teachers, but what is more important is our reflection on feedback. After your appraiser observes your lesson, reflect on their feedback and focus on two targets. Try to meet them by your next lesson observation. If you are not sure how to teach something, observe your colleagues who are good at it. Write everything down and adapt it to your teaching style, as all of us are different. Respect different teaching styles and do not judge but help!Also, ask for help, as no one is perfect, and we all need to work on some aspect of our teaching.

If you're able to, try learning a new language yourself. Whether you get one on one tutoring, take a formal class, or teach yourself, this will help you to understand part of what your students are going through. Compare what you're doing with your students to what is helping you in your own language journey. In my experience, this has helped me to grow both in terms of implementing new methods to help students and gaining more empathy and understanding. Especially in cases like this, it helps to be both the student and the teacher.
