What are some effective ways to develop a prototype for testing a new product or service?

Many times developer define functional goal to be validated. Instead, I think this should be commercial goals to be proven instead. What features will fetch the most sales. Prove that customer will buy this combination of features in a prototype before building the real thing. Market testing with a prototype is cheaper than a fully certified product. But of course, most enterprises already know that their customer will buy the newer upgrade as this isn't a brand new market. Thus, most developers only think that it's about the function. But It's always about the market needs.

It is important to assess how many resources you are going to have in each portion of your project. If you have limited resources, you might start piloting the prototype idea before even considering invest in real/demo prototypes. It is the cheapest way to start, it might save a lot of money when building the real prototype and at the end drive faster results, validation and adjustments.

A prototype is an early version of a product from which future versions are developed. Engineers and product developers often create these test versions of a new product, service or device before releasing it. Prototypes aren't the final product or service. Instead, they provide a way to test an idea, validate the operational process and identify ways to improve the item before releasing it to the public. The prototype can be poked, prodded, thrown against a wall and put through other tests. If it passes these tests, it has a greater likelihood of satisfying customers. If the prototyping process reveals flaws, the item could be scrapped.

When starting an R&D project, we often miss what it will actually serve. This applies to prototypes. For this reason, it is very important to evaluate and clarify with the team why we are developing this prototype. In fact, if possible, I think it is very important that there is a clear point of view among the team members about where this work can affect the company's strategy. If we do these things, we can design steps and approaches that will prevent the prototypes we produce from being perceived as a cost center. Because the perception of R&D as a cost center does not indicate a very bright situation. In this respect, we need to keep the purpose and the path to value alive in front of our eyes at all times.

In my perspective, defining clear goals is essential before developing a prototype. This includes identifying the main features and benefits of the product or service, understanding the needs and preferences of the target users, and determining how success will be measured, along with the criteria for validation. These defined goals serve as a roadmap, helping to focus on crucial aspects, streamline the development process, and avoid unnecessary complexities and costs.

After being myself involved in a lot of prototyping I would advice caution here. Depending on the market you are in you will have different requirements. If you are working for big OEMs or big players you will have no room for failure. So testing your ability to produce in specs and checking your capacity are paramount. Also carefully document everything with all kinds of details incl the people who participated in each phase. Trust me, you will get back to your reports several times during the first production series. Good luck!

R&D is about being at the edge of what society takes as "usual". And time moves fast. Do not always focus on short term market conditions: maybe what you are developing now is not 100% ready for society or your target market. But it might be soon.
