Some effective ways to design for water efficiency include: rainwater harvesting, use of water-saving devices, adoption of smart irrigation technologies, graywater reuse, sustainable landscaping design, and regular maintenance of hydraulic systems. These strategies aim to reduce water consumption and promote sustainable use of water resources.

On this point, I recommend the following: - Incorporating native plants that are well-adapted to the local climate and require minimal irrigation reduces outdoor water consumption. - Utilizing efficient irrigation systems such as drip irrigation or smart controllers that adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions and soil moisture levels. - Designing landscapes with permeable surfaces like gravel or mulch reduces runoff and promotes water infiltration, improving soil moisture retention.

Water EFFICIENT Infrastructure must be designed under sound engineering criteria and then it must be economically efficient within a framework of project feasibiity.

Before considering saving water, we really need to understand the driver for that, since saving water might actually be bad for the environment. When designing any water saving solution, please prepare a LCA with all the adjustments you need to do, and weigh it versus the impact of the saved water. Using rainwater for flushing toilets typically is not good for the environment, since one needs much more energy and materials to produce, install and maintain such a unit than using potable water can ever return. If water stressed, better construct a centralized water re-use facility. Their environmental impact (and price) is much lower per m3 produced, and they can afford to test the produced water and guarantee a quality.

Agricultural enterprises, particularly irrigated cropland and diary operations are major users of water.
