What are some effective techniques to communicate program risks and issues to senior management?

You should determine what information is necessary for the intended audience, and what information might just confuse the audience or derail the conversation. This also includes tailoring the format of delivery based on the subject and the audience. In addition, be concise in your comminication. Provide any required context and clearly state if you are expecting a decision or input based on the communication and who you are expecting it from.

Communicating risk should be done with thought whenever the risk involved impacts any decision-making process. Managing and sharing the message around program risks can be tricky, but it becomes more accessible when the statement is based on facts, not opinions. To clearly articulate and communicate the risks effectively, understanding the risk and what that means to the program, the organization and key stakeholders is essential. Decision-makers want to understand the entire risk, including the probability and impact; it helps them make a more informed decision based on all the facts and information, which is objective and not reactionary due to opinions and emotions.
