He needs to feel familiar enough to communicate for every personal and working issue. We should never forget that we spend more time with our team members than with our families.

Actively listening to their feedback and addressing concerns promptly fosters trust and a sense of value. Knowing "Why" you are doing "What" you are doing is highly vital to understand the task at hand. It's almost as if that task now has a meaning and a purpose. Manager's are like captains who need to steer their ship and employ synergy between employees. Periodically checking in with employees to and urging them to ask questions is crucial to enable success.

Whilst it is beneficial to recognize achievements, it is equally important that we recognize efforts, whether or not such efforts are successful. For example, where the team works really hard on a pitch or proposal, even when the opportunity is lost, it is crucial to recognize these efforts as it goes a long way to boost employee morale and confidence. Rewards can be quantitative (monetary) and qualitative (non-monetary). For rewards to hit the target and achieve intended results, it should be customized. Proper recognition and rewards systems ensures that employees are “plugged in” and “switched on” to achieve organizational goals and aspirations.

Recognize achievement allows to understand what had positive effects on employer expectations or company plan, but most important it helps to understand why other achievements didn’t happen.

Empowering employees requires a strong ability for delegation. In my opinion the key here is ownership. As a leader you will need to search for the right balance between delegating tasks and keeping control. Not all employees will react similarly. Therefore we come back to the transparency in communicating as well as doing this regularly. In my view focus should therefore be on identifying who is willing to take ownership in the team and for those who does not, assess how to empower them to do that in the future. There might be situations in which employees would avoid taking certain responsibility, but a leader would find reasons to motivate and empower these employees to contribute beyond its initial willingness.

Do this by availing them with compensatory incentives for excellent performance and dedication to corporate success. The constantly high performing employees can be offered a certain allotments of the company shares, as a way of motivating them further towards higher performances and sustain their loyalty. Being able to own valuable growable stake in the company will help employees begin to see the company as their own. They now have a stake in the company and will give their best to ensure it's success. They envision their own successful future encapsulated in that of the company.

Employees empowered with the appropriate degree of choice and autonomy have a greater level of pride and ownership in their work.

Motivation changes frequently depending on our current and changing contexts. It’s different to our purpose and meaning which are often longer term. Motivation can drop rapidly within a day, and so we need to be ready as leaders to focus on motivating teams through challenging times on a daily basis.

Something else to consider is really taking interest in your employees and their future regardless of where their future resides. For many years I have told my employees that I am here to help them grow and achieve whatever goal they have. Whether that goal is to move up internally inside of the company or if that goal is to grow and move out of the company. And often times when I invest in them as a human being they stick through the good and the incredibly tough times.

Don’t ever get greedy at employee’s expense, look after those who are good at their job and leave them alone to do it. That’s when things run the best

During challenging times, the most important thing to ensure is the presence of a team leader along with other relevant team members. For example, if there is a project delivery deadlines the team members shouldn’t feel that team team leader will just through his motivational words with the loftiness of recognition and awards for them and will grab a coffee at his home while others are putting their heads and hands into the project till night. Team leader should be the part of the collective forces to overcome the challenges and celebrate later by giving proper credits to the team members.

One thing I have found very useful in keeping employees highly motivated and engaged during a crisis, downturn or very challenging financial period is to introduce the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). An Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) is an employee benefit plan that gives workers ownership interest in the company in the form of shares of stock. ESOPs encourage employees to give their all as the company’s success translates into financial rewards. They also help staff to feel more appreciated and better compensated for the work they do.
