1 Build trust and rapport

Before you start working on the IEP, you need to establish a positive relationship with the parents. Show them that you respect their input, value their expertise, and care about their child's success. Communicate with them regularly and clearly, and avoid using jargon or acronyms that may confuse them. Listen to their concerns and questions, and address them promptly and respectfully. Acknowledge their strengths and contributions, and celebrate their child's achievements.

In building trust it is important to explain the acronyms and jargon rather than just avoid using it, because while that is going to work for the communication between you and the caregiver(s), it will not necessarily support them going forward. We certainly need to be careful about over and misuse of terminology. It is important to slow down, to have everyone at a baseline understanding, and to have clear reference materials for acronyms and initialisms. It is essential that we have a common language and specific understanding of the language used to describe behavior, identification and intervention.

2 Provide information and support

Parents may feel overwhelmed or intimidated by the IEP process, especially if they are new to it or have had negative experiences in the past. You can help them by providing them with relevant and accessible information about their child's needs, rights, and options. Explain the purpose, benefits, and components of the IEP, and how it will be implemented and monitored. Share examples of successful IEPs and strategies that have worked for other students. Offer them resources and referrals to other professionals or organizations that can assist them.

3 Involve them in decision making

Parents are equal partners in the IEP team, and they have the right to participate in every aspect of the IEP development. Invite them to share their goals, expectations, and preferences for their child, and incorporate them into the IEP. Ask for their feedback and suggestions on the proposed services, accommodations, and assessments, and negotiate any disagreements or conflicts. Respect their choices and consent, and document them in the IEP. Review the IEP with them before signing it, and make sure they understand and agree with it.

Always remember that the mother is the first university. The father is an essential contributor to success. A lot of the time schools need support & therefore parental support is vital. Today with the high tech demands needed & often misused, parents can be that bridge between success & failure. Equity is about bridging that gap to success. That small effort you can make to get a student from D to a C grade is crucial. Having afterschool intervention sessions are an example of this & often I have done this in schools where there is a huge knowledge gap, students may need that hour after school and that’s where parents are vital cogs to support that session. They can be involved, participate and also be focal in getting the message through.

4 Encourage their involvement in implementation

Parents can play a key role in supporting their child's learning and progress on the IEP goals. Encourage them to be involved in the implementation of the IEP, both at school and at home. Provide them with specific and practical tips on how to help their child with homework, assignments, and projects. Share with them the data and evidence of their child's performance and growth, and ask for their observations and feedback. Invite them to attend meetings, conferences, and events related to the IEP, and appreciate their attendance and input.

The IEP is not a static document, but a dynamic and flexible plan that can be revised and updated as needed. To ensure that the IEP remains relevant and effective, you need to maintain ongoing communication and collaboration with the parents. Check in with them regularly and inform them of any changes or issues that may arise. Solicit their opinions and concerns, and address them promptly and respectfully. Seek their input and approval for any modifications or amendments to the IEP. Celebrate their child's achievements and challenges, and acknowledge their role in their child's success.
