1 Types of power

Power is the ability to influence others to achieve a desired outcome, and there are various types of power in organizational behavior. Legitimate power is derived from a formal position or authority in the organization, like a manager having power over their subordinates. Reward power is the ability to provide rewards or incentives, such as a salesperson offering discounts or bonuses. Coercive power is the capacity to impose punishments or sanctions, like a supervisor threatening to fire someone or reduce their pay. Expert power is the expertise or skills that others need or value, such as a consultant providing advice or solutions. Referent power is being liked, respected, or admired by others; for example, a charismatic leader inspiring their followers and creating a sense of belonging.

2 Dynamics of politics

Politics is the act of using power to influence others for personal or collective gain. The outcomes of politics can be positive or negative, depending on the goals and methods of the actors involved. Several factors affect the dynamics of politics in organizational behavior, such as organizational culture, structure, and change. A culture that encourages collaboration, transparency, and ethical conduct can reduce the negative effects of politics, while a culture that promotes competition, secrecy, and self-interest can increase them. The structure of an organization should be clear, flexible, and decentralized to facilitate the flow of information and participation. Change can create opportunities or threats for different groups or individuals depending on how they perceive and react to it. Unanticipated change can also lead to resistance, uncertainty, and stress which can fuel political behavior.

Building power & influence in a political environment requires asking foundational questions 1. Power to accomplish what? 2. For the benefit of whom? 3. Influence Who? 4. Influence for what Purpose? For building power, I focus on, Listening and demonstrating Understanding of what was heard as the most impactful. With influence, I focus on is building trust. People will grant power & influence if they get sufficient answers to three questions. These questions are never asked explicitly. They overanalyze every word and deed of a leader, in order to find some hint of the answers to these questions: 1. Do you hear me? 2. Can you show me that you understand? 3. Can I trust you to guide me while having my best interest in mind?

Power and politics are not inherently bad or good, but they are inevitable and unavoidable in organizational behavior. To use them effectively and ethically, it is important to increase your power and influence in the organization. Establishing relationships with colleagues, superiors, subordinates, and stakeholders can help build trust, rapport, and mutual support. Additionally, developing skills, knowledge, and abilities can increase your value and credibility. Lastly, demonstrating results, outcomes, and achievements can increase your impact and visibility in the organization. These strategies can help you gain recognition, respect, support, and approval for your decisions.

In my experience, it's better to use your power to good effect over others. Strong leaders have the ability to affect, direct, inspire, and persuade others. Your level of power will depend on how well you perform these tasks. A clear sign that you are not prepared for additional power is when you abuse it.
