You have to be very clear on why you're doing what you're doing. A good response will touch on this in some way an effective one will make sure you cover- 1. Why is it that you do what you do? 2. Why does your organization? 3. How does the why affect your communities? 4. Why should other people care? 5. How are all of these linked? Being able to effectively respond to this is how I've gotten other stakeholders on board and increased confidence in my leadership capabilities.

As the CSR Lead, I am often at the forefront of presenting our initiatives to stakeholders and clients. My role demanded clear communication about our CSR projects, objectives, and the tangible impact they created. I always began by articulating our corporate "why" for social impact. When discussing an outreach program, I would briefly outline the situation we addressed, objectives, strategies, and the measurable outcomes achieved. I emphasised quantifiable results, such as community upliftment metrics/ environmental benefits, supplemented by testimonials from beneficiaries. Adopting these strategies enhanced stakeholder trust and our CSR initiatives witnessed increased collaborations and are recognised for their transparency.

3 Show your impact

Another way to stand out in your interview is to show your impact, not just your activities. This means that you need to quantify and qualify the results and outcomes of your social impact projects, and how they made a difference for your beneficiaries, stakeholders, or communities. You can use numbers, percentages, or indicators to measure your impact, such as the number of people reached, the amount of funds raised, the percentage of improvement, or the feedback received. You can also use stories, testimonials, or anecdotes to illustrate your impact, and how it changed lives, attitudes, or behaviors. 4 Be prepared for curveballs

Sometimes, you might face unexpected or tricky questions that are designed to test your critical thinking, creativity, or ethics in social impact. For example, you might be asked to share your opinion on a controversial issue, propose a solution for a hypothetical scenario, or explain how you would handle a dilemma or conflict in social impact. To answer these questions, you need to be prepared for curveballs, and have a strategy to handle them. One possible strategy is to use the RAP method, which stands for Reflect, Analyze, and Present. This means that you need to take a moment to reflect on the question and understand what it is asking. Next, you need to analyze the question and identify the key factors, assumptions, or criteria involved. Then, you need to present your answer and explain your reasoning, logic, or evidence behind it.

Not always "social impact" is what one is able to see on the on ground. In such cases, it's important to document and showcase, how one's work has added to the body of knowledge and how the same can be beneficial to the further progress towards the objective in the longer run. This is especially true for projects involving Behavioral Change Communication or explorative projects dealing with niche ideas or population groups. The same are not just time taking but also complex and nuanced in terms of both exhibiting and assessing impact. Therefore, the key is giving due importance to incremental changes and not just transformative progress in the social sector and understanding the correlation between change and social impact.

5 Ask insightful questions

Finally, one of the best ways to impress your interviewer and show your interest and enthusiasm for social impact is to ask insightful questions at the end of the interview. Asking questions will help you learn more about the organization, the role, and the expectations, and also demonstrate your curiosity, knowledge, and fit for the position. However, you need to avoid asking questions that are too general, obvious, or irrelevant, and focus on questions that are specific, meaningful, and relevant. For example, you can ask questions about the organization's current or future projects, challenges, or opportunities, the role's responsibilities, goals, or impact, or the organization's culture, values, or vision.

Two simple frameworks I have recently learned to effectively respond to social impact questions are: 1. Problem-Solution-Benefit 2. What? So what? Now what? The first framework helps logically structure and sequence the response in three buckets. The second framework follows similar general approach but the sequence involves quick description of the issue, why it matters, and then what's next.
