To address gentrification, we must distinguish between “Affordable Housing,” created through subsidies, and naturally affordable housing, which comes from producing enough homes to meet demand. Subsidies alone can’t solve the issue—there simply isn’t enough funding available to solve our 4M home shortage. Gentrification happens when housing supply is limited, driving up prices and displacing long-time residents. To combat this, we need to leverage private sector investment to boost housing production and preserve existing homes. By expanding supply, we can relieve price pressure and prevent displacement, creating communities where people of all income levels can afford to stay, ensuring more inclusive and opportunity-rich neighborhoods.

Gentrification is capitalism, taking low value assets and increasing their economic value. It is the act of bringing amenities to communities that have been deliberately under invested in. It is the process of reversing the harmful effects of redlining and racist land use practices. Gentrification is not cultural or economic displacement. It is the opposite of blight and decline.

One easy step to take: make an effort to recruit and employ staff and board members who actually have lived experiences and are a reflection of the communities you serve. Gentrification isn't a force that nonprofits can necessarily change, but by being thoughtful about the composition of your organization you can be proactive and in tune with who you serve.

Thanks for such an important question. Gentrification is an act of middle-class violence upon the working-class wrapped up in falsity. Time for honest, plain talking and working class humour and peer connection to show us the way forward. Hard road, given the odds against and power imbalance.

I am trying to identify who are the beneficiaries of gentrification, if the people displaced are not sharing in the high value communities now constructed.
