What are some effective flipped classroom activities that can improve student engagement?

The main question here is "curate or create?" It may be overwhelming to create every single material yourself. Good news is that most of the platforms offer a library of materials that other teachers created. For example, you may find a variety of quizzes in Quizziz, and pick any of them for your classes. That said, research has shown that students feel the connection and perform better when learning materials, especially videos, are created by their own teachers. This is definitely an important factor when it comes to student engagement.

Most of the teachers, who wants to give Flipped Learning a try, ask this question: "What am I going to do with the students in my lesson?!" Well, pretty much anything that you think will help students deepen their understanding of the content. It is imperative, though, that you ensure students mastered the content through videos (or other materials assigned). So, before you start the main part of your lesson, you may run a Q/A session, where students may ask if there is anything they didn't understand from the video(s).

Differentiation is more within reach for teachers who implement Flipped Learning. Students may be allowed to adjust their pacing so as to master the content. Fast-pacers may be given tasks that will help them deepen their understanding of the content. Teachers must avoid, though, to assign these students yet another worksheet with similar questions, as they already mastered it. Students may also be asked to work on a particular topic from previous years, before they carry on with their current task. For example, if a student cannot solve linear equations because of their weakness on operations with negative numbers, they may first master operations with negative numbers and then come back to linear equations.

It's like having a personal tutor for each student, guiding them towards success. But here's the real kicker: GoFormative lets me peek behind the curtain. I can view individual student responses, both from those who aced the assessment and those who didn't. The real magic happens when I review these answers with student names hidden. I challenge my students to analyze why their peers might have stumbled on certain questions. It's a collective effort, and it's a revelation.

Flipped Learning allows teachers to allocate more one-on-one time with their students, which can be used to => provide descriptive feedback on their work, => guide them through the correct answer from their mistakes, and => have a mini-teaching session to clarify the misconceptions on one-on-one (or small group). Video-marking is also a great way of providing feedback. You may record a video while marking assessments and share the video with them. Some video creating software allow teachers to pose a question during the video; students are required to answer the question so as to continue watching. I don't prefer this method while teaching maths to my classes, but it may be a good tool in other subjects.

I use testmoz.com, which is an online quiz website. => Its design is quite simple, => there are no ads, => neither students nor teachers need to create an account => teachers can see the results of their students => most of the features are free I create what I call as "Online Self-Checks" for my students' use on Testmoz. My students use this tool to check whether their answers are correct. They can always re-submit their answers after working on their mistakes, there is no limit. The most important part is that they call me every time they hit 100%. I check their work and provide descriptive feedback on one-on-one.
