What are some of the current trends and innovations in data analytics that you are following or learning?

In order to add value as a data analyst or data scientist, you need to first understand what your stakeholders find valuable. The business may come to you and ask for certain metrics or statistics. Don't be a Data waiter and just bring them what they asked for. Be a data consultant. Find out WHY they are asking for it. You may know an easier, more efficient, or better way to grt them what they need. I went from data analyst to Sr. Data Analyst very quickly because I focused on getting to the WHY. Sometimes, even executives weren't fully aware of what they were asking for, and consulting with me helped them get clarity around their objectives. TL;DR - Before jumping to a solution, make sure that you fully understand the question.

While there are multiple interpretations of 'data mining' and 'machine learning', there's one advice that's common to both - never begin your journey with any of these analysis techniques. The best approach is to always begin with the business problem. Based on the challenge, choose the approach, and that in turn will help you pick the technique.

As a lead data scientist, staying updated on data analytics trends is vital. I recently came across in-memory data analytics using Arrow along with DuckDB OLAP and was surprised by its exceptional performance and super-efficiency, particularly when handling large Parquet files. This technology has opened up new possibilities for data processing, enabling faster and more streamlined operations with extensive out of memory datasets.

Ethical AI. Observable AI. Blackbox models. These are three trends that are hot topics for practitioners. The more complex a model is, the more difficult it is to understand. This raises the question of how we can measure bias and whether the underlying functions need to be observable. However, isn't one of the advantages of AI that it can perform much more complicated analysis then a human? Limiting AI functionality to models that are more basic, but more transparent may remove much of the benefit that we receive from AI. There are very complicated tests that can analyze AI models, but they are inefficient and expensive. The question becomes, how can we control for ethics, without needing to understand the entire model?

One of the current trends that I am following is conjoint analysis in data mining and ML. In the realm of data mining and ML, conjoint analysis can be leveraged to optimize product design, pricing strategies, and marketing campaigns. By utilizing advanced analytical techniques, such as regression analysis, ML algorithms, or Bayesian methods, researchers can derive valuable insights from conjoint data to make informed decisions and tailor products or services to meet customer needs effectively. The title of this article is misleading. Data analytics is way broader than ML. And this is exactly a trend and an innovation that you should closely follow up. There are other fields, like operations research or causal theory, that bring a lot on the table! The best approaches are hybrid!

I utilize data mining daily to help drive insights into my companies loyalty program to segment customers, provide personalized offers and evaluate the effectiveness of marketing offer campaigns.
