1 Perspective and distortion

One of the main challenges of architectural photography is how to convey the scale, shape, and depth of a structure without losing its essence or context. Many photographers use wide-angle lenses, tilt-shift lenses, or drones to achieve different perspectives and distortions that can enhance or transform the appearance of a building. For example, a wide-angle lens can create a dramatic effect by exaggerating the size and curvature of a facade, while a tilt-shift lens can create a miniature effect by blurring the foreground and background. A drone can offer a bird's eye view that can reveal patterns, textures, and contrasts that are not visible from the ground.

Controlling perspective for an outcome which photographically looks as closely as possible to a structure's appearance in 'real life' is the ambition of much architectural photography. Specialist kit often comes into play here, but is accompanied by the need for a deep wallet. Without a perspective control lens, this is a challenge indeed, and best met by moving back from the building keeping the horizon level, shooting a wider view and cropping in, or using longer focal length lenses to minimise distortion. Shooting from a viewpoint equidistant from your subject's top and bottom will help too - eg., can you stand to shoot from an elevated position - a window, balcony or bridge opposite the building in question?

The starter for this thread indicating that tilt-shift lenses are all about creating a 'miniature effect' is simply a visual by-product of their possibilities, and certainly not their primary application. Instead, they're mostly employed for controlling perspective. Conventionally, If a photographer is stood at ground level, relatively close to a tall building, tilting the camera back is often the only recourse to showing the upper storeys, and with a wide-angle lens, this inevitably results in converging verticals. With a tilt-shift in place, and by winding the dial on the lens side by several millimetres, the user can manipulate the coverage (depending on camera-subject distance), by many metres.

One technique you might have also heard of is ‘light painting’ this process involves creatin mg a composite image made from Several images shot at different exposure with all artificial lights on, daylight or available light only, and images taken with extra artificial light to particular areas (flash or continuous light) All these images are then aligned and set as layers in Photoshop. Masks are created and the process of blending the images takes place manually. The final image is the product of all of the best parts of the images put together. Think of it as a sandwich, with the best parts only inside.
