What are some creative ways to present data that are not commonly used?

I agree that organization of data helps make better sense of it. But depending on the volume of data involved, this would usually require patience, focus and attention to detail to properly analyse and process it to relevant objective.

- Understand the target audience - what is their learning style - Use the most relevant learning style - Break the monotony for data - Make sure data is presented aesthetically and is not cluttered / appears very daunting - Keep it crisp and use only relevant data - one which supports the point you are trying to make - Use creativity when it comes to selecting representation, visuals, colors, types of graphs/charts

Think of presenting data as preparing a traditional Indian thali ??............ The raw data are your basic ingredients like rice and lentils ????. Standard graphs are like your dal and roti—essential but expected ????. Creative ways to showcase your data are the exotic spices like saffron and cardamom, or intricate techniques like dum cooking or tandoori grilling, that truly make your thali unforgettable ?????.

Remember that data is just the tool, to help you bring weight and clarity to your message. Whenever you are working on your presentation you can follow these 3 simple steps to make it more impactful. 1. Think message first - what are you trying to plant, what action you would like the audience to take with them after the meeting? 2. Come up with a story. You need to land your message nicely - guide you audience to the conclusion, so that ideally THEY make it themselves 3. Add weight and reliability to your slides with data and facts. Never show big, clunky tables, derive and show easy to consume figures with hidden slides to explain them if nessesity arise.

Try to connect the dots This is important to understand what your audience wants to hear and how well you are able to connect your data with their problem. It's important to get an understanding of the tone you are creating, as well as the general expectations of the audience/reader. The appendix section might also be a great place to place more complex graphs in the event that more data granularity might be preferred by a subset of your audience.

However they can become a source of confusion for more nuances or technical data. For example in a financial chart, how do you create an set of icons to differentiate gross profit versus gross margin versus variance versus budget? In these situations, ask 'what is the preferred language of the audience or sector?' and then speak to them in their preferred language.

Many people have the wrong idea when it comes to using animations or transitions. The initial impulse is usually to use it to make the slide look "alive" and "engaging". However, a more powerful way to use motion is to use it to increase SIGNAL and reduce NOISE in your presentation. SIGNAL = the information that you are delivering (at any point of time). NOISE = everything else on your slide. The idea is to use animations and transitions to: 1. introduce or emphasise elements that communicate a point 2. show a transformation or change in the elements 3. hide or remove elements when moving to a different point This is easier if you remember to always design your presentation in a way that helps you deliver one point at a time.

From my own experience in become more of distraction than being illustration, I prefer using static diagrams & charts and bring the main focus on the presenter.

Most effective if the question leads the audience to discover the point you want to make for themselves.

Something I feel that new presenters often don't remember is that your slides should not be like cue cards for YOU, they're there for the AUDIENCE to get to grips with what you're saying. Storytelling can be a really incredible technique, but it makes all the difference if your slides reflect what your audience should know instead of giving cues to you, the expert. The slides should empathise with the fact that listeners will very likely have much, much less understanding of the data than you do, which is why you're there to bring them up to speed. The slides need to illustrate the journey from no knowledge about the findings, to full knowledge.

In my view, the crucial element often overlooked is context. While data may be presented as factual information, it fails to resonate with the audience unless it is contextualized—be it through industry benchmarks, geographic comparisons, or peer assessments. However, merely comparing data with benchmarks is insufficient; effective visual representation is equally important. Take sales data by customer as an example: while you could provide context by ranking customers or making period-on-period comparisons, the most impactful way to communicate the story is through a scatter graph that plots revenue against profit. This visually highlights which customers are both profitable and driving growth.

When presenting back campaign results to clients having a clear beginning, middle and end is key to telling an effective story with the data. 1. Beginning - Start off with an aim and/or hypothesis that addresses the client’s objectives to help set the scene 2. Middle - Use data to provide a 360 degree view of what happened throughout the campaign, using a structure that aligns directly with the overarching objectives 3. End - It is important that you come to a conclusion; better yet present this conclusion as the solution to the aim/hypothesis that you started with. Presenting actionable insights from the data will make your work memorable, enabling the client to walk away with something they can practically implement

Make up characters and attribute different data to different people, names, countries, or places they live thought the presentation and if possible made a reference during the introduction , body, and ending. Make it personal if possible (example: during a trip visiting another country, I found out of all the Resturants I visited only one served tea on the dinner) (Only one in my family does not have LinkedIn account)

Problem solving statement is the most powerful way to address the content and get audience engaged. It gives perspective with real life cases.

I hope nobody reads these side notes and thinks any of this is a good idea! While we are on LinkedIn talking about data in presentations, it's not a good idea to represent data as a cream pie, unless your business sells cream pies. Anyone looking at data in a presentation needs data turned into INFORMATION that tells them what actions they should take next, not animated cream pies.

I love humor & creativity but not like that ?? I remember listening to startup pitches, only the smart funny attractive person with amazing numbers who attract us. Make ur slides formal but creative, break the ice in a funny way, try to be organic because it will fire back if u tried to insert a joke of a funny line while u r not that person.

For instance, making fun of yourself can establish a connection with others and humanise you at the same time by being vulnerable. In fact, the stronger the presenter's ability to connect with people in everyday situations through humour, the more effectively he or she can employ it with an audience.

Less is more when it comes to presentations. More often than not, you will come across audiences with varying level of IQ in the same room and keeping each one of them engaged is not an easy task. - Most people have the wrong idea about presentation. Personally , I feel it is a story telling exercise rather than a collection of slides. And in order to become a good story teller, you need be very clear about the story internally. - Everyone is expecting "What's in it for me?" at all times. Make sure you relay this message across straight away. - MECE principle : Mutually Exclusive Collectively Exhaustive - 5 * 5 rule : Not more than 5 Bullet points and not more than 5 sentences in a bullet. Audience listen rather than reading

Among the examples shared above, storytelling is definitely an arc I would run with - it usually works across a varied line of target audiences. However, unless you are presenting to children, you should avoid taking other suggestions at face value. For example - it is a big no for me to use cars/ plane icons to describe their sales. It would crowd my slide with unnecessary graphics and distract my audience. Adapt to your target audience and take advice on the internet with a pinch of salt and a whole lot of wisdom.

I have experimented with data presentations a lot and have designed my own recipe. I follow following steps 1) Spend some time researching your audience. Each person is unique and has a separate KRA. Hence knowing their interests helps arrive upon distilling data to be presented. 2) Provide a brief context why the data is being presented. Getting all on board is very necessary before moving ahead. 3) The mind loves to see a lot of visuals but finally needs a concise summary of what it’s consuming. Hence a single line summary at bottom of slides help a lot!
