Skill development, career enhancement and community involvement are obvious benefits. Exposed to others′ learning and cutting edge thought leaders alike. But, less obviously, it also offers exposure to real world priorities and problem solving. A project that is a labour of love may still be valuable. But the top FOSS projects over xyz period will reflect actual needs of private and public orgs. And for contrarian personalities, those high profile projects may have dependencies that are insufficiently maintained. A developer may consider carving out a niche for themselves in those and support a greater ecosystem (think log4j or ssl libs).

Working on the open has some nice perks, but you also need to take into account that you are showing your job to the world all the time. The "open source tax" refers to the fact that you need to be more careful and work with better standards if you are contributing to an open project, as making quick fixes to go faster is not always an option (it is quite common in the private development because it does the job) Take into account that not all projects attract the same people, and that big projects (where all those things are true) are harder to achieve. When I was working with partners and customers to collaborate in open source, one huge value we brought it was the capability to discuss and talk to the right people in the community.

Anybody can post an issue or request for consideration by the FOSS projects that define everyone′s daily lives, from consumers to enterprises. Those will be openly discussed on their merits.

Most of the projects in OSS are really happy when a new contributor wants to be part of the community and will support you, but be ready to learn about the best way to contribute, and the coding standards used. In many times, it is great to discuss how the new feature you are proposing will make it into the roadmap before you go and create a PR. There is always an understanding on what is needed in the project that you need to share so your contribution benefits every one. If you want to contribute but you are not aligned with the overall strategy, you can always choose "first issues" or improve edge cases that don't require changes in other parts of the project.

Having a nice documentation in place can help a project a lot making it easier for new users to start with the product or doing more things with it, so anything you can do to documentation will be greatly appreciated (even if your language is lacking and somebody needs to edit it later)

All of these combined helps you become a better software developer, thereby advancing your career prospective.
