Organize your footage before you get started, log everything (even natural sound), use it all to compose a script, and get alignment from stakeholders before you start cutting. Edit by constantly thinking of yourself as someone viewing this story for the first time. Be brutal. Don't fall in love with any shots. The story comes first. Any good story requires emotional investment from the audience, clarity, and payoffs throughout. If something's unclear, go back and build the setup to it earlier. Avoid flashbacks. Empower your viewers with the information and emotional connection they need to drive them through the story.
