There's a broad range of open-source and proprietary tools available for each step of the process: each brings its own benefits and limitations. ANSA/META is popularly used within the automotive industry for pre/post-processing. Msc and NX NASTRAN are popular solutions used for linear static and dynamic analysis. Hypermesh is preferred for durability and life studies. LS-Dyna, ABAQUS, and ADAMS are popular for multibody dynamics.
