While you may hold some information about your products, there are numerous new third-party products that could potentially integrate with yours. It's not expected to know them all, but having a foundational understanding and a willingness to learn mindset would certainly benefit you in this role.

Having the technical aptitude and knowledge is certainly important, however, I have found in my experience that often knowing how to manipulate technology and customize systems to match the customers needs and expectations is just as critical. In the new age of AI, it is necessary that System Admins are able to adjust and pivot from the outdated nomenclature of legacy systems, rather devise extraordinary solutions and readjust customer awareness in the technology they're paying for so they can achieve the maximum potential from their investment, this is almost certain to increase the organizations productivity in every area of their business model, making their core systems one of their most valued asset.

As a Systems Admin there isn't a week that goes by that I'm not in communication with the head of each department. Its necessary to have an effective communications with your vendors, clients, execs., board members but I like to stress that communication with end users can be more often more beneficial than the list above. These are the users who are in front of our systems daily, log the most hours, consume the most bandwidth and make or break our securities! Individual users always have opinions, but the consensus matters! They see the errors and experience the good and bad. System Administration is never as cut and dry as help files and support documentation. Most error messages today are 'catch-all' and many problems encountered are user related or created. Its not just problem solving that is necessary but knowing user mentality, how they operate and how customers utilize system components. Out-of-the-box thinking is required to know if systems are being used in the appropriate ways, and if not, is there a different configuration or even solution that should be applied for customers, or if perhaps user training is needed. Understand, often we integrate multiple systems into our IT environments that can conflict, its important to have multiple support resources and redundancy so loss of production is minimal.

Problem solving skills are an essential part of System Administration and in turn this is a critical part of a System Administrators performance evaluation. So, being able to effectively and efficiently solve problems will give you a leg up on others in your performance evaluation.

In terms of teamwork skills, it's vital to collaborate with both sales and developers. Summarizing the case and drafting it in a language understandable to others is crucial, especially when we might be the ones updating our customers later on.
