Data Stewards are expected to be semi-technical and semi-business personalities. A clear understanding of source systems, technical metadata, business metadata, the lineage, the definitions and the criticality of the data elements, is required to be successful in this role. They should also know the business processes around their data elements and applications of their respective line of business.

Data Stewards should definitely be able to follow data governance framework. Although, said framework should be designed by and be the responsibility of the bigger picture information manager. A good data steward though can be a change initiator. Ideally, they will be one of the key people providing feedback on the current governance procedures to management, hence identifying when governance strategies maybe need to be reviewed or updated to suit new requirements.

Data stewardship tools must be thoroughly assessed by the organization before going through with implementing one. There needs to be a business case and a concrete plan on how the investment in such tool will bring greater return or improve regulatory compliance - thus decreasing risk. If an organization invests in a tool that quickly becomes obsolete due to lack of adoption, and that can happen for a number of reasons (f.i. lack of expertise, insufficient communication, poor integration in the architecture, non-intuitive UI/UX...), it turns quickly into just throwing money away. Ultimately, this could escalate into the deterioration of how senior management perceives the Data Governance practice.

Data stewardship skills include communication, collaboration, problem-solving, critical thinking, and leadership. Data stewards need to have strong communication skills to convey data policies, standards, and processes to data owners, users, and custodians, as well as to explain data issues, solutions, and outcomes to stakeholders. A data stewardship community is a network of peers, mentors, experts, and partners that support data stewards in their role. A data stewardship community can provide data stewards with knowledge, guidance, feedback, and resources to help them improve their skills and performance. A data stewardship community can also foster a culture of data governance and data literacy across the organization, as well as to promote data sharing, collaboration, and innovation. Data stewards can join or create data stewardship communities within or outside their organization, using platforms such as online forums, blogs, podcasts, webinars, or events.

Data stewards should know their peers for sure, for the data integration perspective. The data produced in their line of business would be shared across the organization, at the least sharing with other lines of business. Together they form the data stewardship community, expected to share knowledge and support members.

To add to the article, you can't just go and assign the Data Steward role to someone in the organization. There needs to exist a cautious approach to the person's current responsibilities and understand, first, their motivation, and second, how they could alleviate their current tasks to accommodate this new responsibility.
