At the essence of being a textile sourcing manager, that person has to have a passion for all types of textiles- a profound understanding and respect of and for, the history of weaving felting, and dying. A textile manager must understand, and revere diverse cultures all of which have contributed to the vast contributions of type, style, physical, and cultural needs that have driven textile design. Joining/participating in multi cultural international organizations including color study & forecasting, art, & trade groups, are key to a broad work view. Active interaction with local / National trade groups offer insights into market trends/ needs. Distilling and sharing with internal teams becomes the spark for creating meaningful product.

Dovetailed with the cultural awareness noted by @ClaudiaDrukerBerg above, are these ethical issues now front and centre in the industry. The negotiation skills used in dealing with vendors will be well used in dealing with clients too. Especially when the contract focuses solely on price. The textile sourcing manager able to navigate both sides of this deal - along with all these other qualities presented - is a rare breed! To remember that it’s people who make and wear fabrics, and our planet that gives and receives the raw materials is a helpful lens through which to see a way through.

I always believe in looking what people are wearing when they are walking to work, school, or etc. So many trends start from what real everyday people are wearing. I love watching social media and young people and how they put things together that we might not think of. It’s not always about what you like. It’s about what makes the consumer happy.

In my previous experiences with working with many off shore suppliers…..The main skill is knowing your stuff, knowing what you are talking about and being able to share and impart knowledge with your suppliers…..to create a credible and genuine working relationship. If you can help educate and collaborate with your suppliers, you can work to a trusted life long source channel. It make take sometime and mistakes but if you at we open to your needs and explain yourself clearly, whatever the miles between you……you can build a mutually beneficial working relationship. Know your wants, needs and boundaries. Be patient and understanding whilst knowing your commercial needs and lead time restrictions xx

In my experience, as the end converter of textiles, the experience of receiving beautiful fabric options from a company that are unusable for the task intended is a really disappointing moment. We get around that by doing in-house testing of anything that has characteristics that could cause issues once installed. Textiles have to look and feel great on the face, but if the reverse of a particular design or weave is not of a nature to sit well with other textiles, there is no long term benefit to using it. Double sided chenille can fall into this category. Therefore, I believe experience of using fabrics and textiles would be one of the most useful superpowers of a textile sourcing and buying department.
