A business cannot be built on you as the copywriter. If it is its not really a business you are just a freelancer. A business is when you are managing other people to do the work. That requires a whole lot of skills from leadership, to mentoring, to being able to document and establish standards and procedures.

Going out on your own can be equal parts exciting and stressful. Some people plan. Others dive in head first without much of a plan. And some folks fall somewhere in between (like me). I DO recommend having cash reserves (6 to 9 months' worth, depending on your situation) or keeping some other part-time jobs or side hustle while you're building your business. In my first few years, I cobbled together my existence through teaching and doing radio on the weekends, overnights, and holidays. It can take time to build a business. Your mileage will vary, of course. Oh, and be skeptical of anyone promising that you'll make six figures out of the gate.

I would say that network and portfolio the two MOST important pieces here, but also support (which isn't mentioned). You need a support system around you rallying behind you, not just emotionally, but financially, as with most businesses. Because you're not going to start copywriting and start having $10k months out of the gate. That's just not how any of this real world stuff works, no matter what you're being sold (by other great copywriters :) ).
