What should you consider before pursuing a management role in technological innovation?

For me, I became a technology leader because I had a vision for the impact that technology could have in my sector. Having a vision for how to leverage technology seems like it should be common, but it's a rare trait. In addition, I became a leader so that I could promote good leadership traits for others and become a mentor.

Today, managing innovation in technology can be like a kid in a candy store. You see the vision and understand how the technology can transform, yet, the hurdles to getting a product or solution that is “market ready” and in production requires the manager to understand all the nuances. Legal and protection of intellectual material is another concern, you need to protect the investment made, and ensure that competition is prevented from getting your innovation out from under you.

I've always aspired to make a meaningful impact on the world, and management provides me with the platform to do so on a larger scale. The following points highlight what motivates me to be a manager: Leverage: By leading larger groups of professionals, I can accomplish more towards a shared vision than I could working alone. Mentorship: Guiding and witnessing individuals grow, ultimately achieving their own successes, is as fulfilling for me as delivering tangible products. Culture: Establishing a positive and supportive environment, where individuals can thrive and produce their best work, is both challenging and immensely rewarding.

At the most foundational level, one needs to really love technology, thoroughly enjoy business world and mentoring a set of high potential team members who are equally passionate as ourselves. Leaders who lead at the confluence of these three foundational aspects will be in for a remarkable rollercoaster journey, where they can make a significant impact on customers, industry, and the world by solving problems that truly matter. The results can be so self propelling that one can truly run a marathon like a 100 meter dash!

I've found that the ability to stay calm under pressure and be confident in one's own abilities is essential for great leaders. All toxic managerial traits stem from insecurity. It's normal to have doubts and feel lost sometimes, but having the confidence to admit when you don't know something and seek out people with complementary skills and knowledge is what distinguishes great leaders. The biggest enemy of leaders is themselves. In addition, some other skills that have helped me as a leader are my experience in teaching, software/hardware architecture, passion for psychology and different cultures, and knowledge of the stock market and financial statements.

Adapting smartly in a rapidly changing environment while staying true to your vision is crucial. A leader needs to juggle like a pro, knowing what to focus on and what to let go. Having strong tech and business acumen, along with logical thinking to prioritize, is key to staying successful and not wasting time, team energy, or resources. High level of user empathy and understanding of the problem being solved, is critical to ensure we dont end up missing the fundamental gaps that are being addressed with the solution. Leader should also be good at communicating, inspiring and taking/giving feedback.

As someone with an academic background in Sociology, International Relations and Anthropology, and a practical knowledge of technological innovation, I believe social sciences provide a robust foundation for understanding and navigating the human elements of technological innovation. They offer insights into human behaviour, communication, and collaboration, helping you become a more effective and well-rounded manager. By combining technical expertise with these social science skills, you can lead innovation teams more successfully and drive positive outcomes in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

As an innovation leader you should be proficient in gathering business requirements, customer experience, translating complex concepts into easy-to-understand topics, creative and persistent.

It is also important to understand if your style fits into the company and team culture and where you may need to adapt vs where you want to influence the team to change. Secondly, many such innovation projects are high risk and high reward. Does your company encourage bad news early. Is there leadership buy-in for the transformation. Understanding that will help you adjust your own style and help team be successful.

Innovation projects were managed using the overall project management process with an important caveat: It is critical that your customers, stakeholders and operations/support personnel are involved in the process so they all take ownership for the implementation and outcomes.

It's particularly demanding to keep a diverse group of individuals, spread across different geographical locations, with different culture, efficiently aligned

This journey is not for the faint hearted; it's about pushing boundaries and redefining what's possible. Be prepared to face a ton of challenges, from dealing with naysayers to managing scarce resources. It's not just about technology; it's about building a culture of experimentation and risk-taking with a diverse team which could have many differing perspectives, work styles, motivation and culture. Things will fail and one needs to know when to change course and when to forge ahead!

One significant challenge in the tech innovation field is its male-dominated environment. This lack of diversity in perspectives can be alarming. To ensure technology has a positive impact, we need broader and more inclusive viewpoints that consider the needs and experiences of all individuals and communities.

As an innovation manager, you will get to work with the smartest people in your organization and they generally have big egos that need to be managed. Also, justifying investments on high-risk endeavors.

The opportunities here are quite limitless, and would be personal for each leader who decides to take the plunge. The inner spirit of goodness which is always to to resolve the problems and help out others. With this inspiration and consistency, one can head towards innovation and thus those technological innovations come across to imagine for problems solvings. It is that simple and easy.

According to me, it is a combination of having a certain belief in technology's ability to bring about change, understanding the limitations of techno-determinism and a willingness to get down to the trenches. The rest is economics and social sciences
