2 How does a VFL work?

Cheap an easy way to check the continuity of a fibre link - it won't, however, let you know how well data will travel the link, just that light went in at one end, and popped out the other (or if looking for faults, somewhere in the middle, where it shouldn't)

A VFL can be used on Multimode and Singlemode. VFLs typically come with a 2.5mm port to test a 2.5mm connector such as SC, but as it is not a ferruled connection, these can be UPC or APC whithout any adapters being needed. You can purchase 1.25mm adapters for the likes of LC but can be cheaper to use an SC-LC patch lead to convert instead.

NEVER look into a light source, or at the light as it pops out of the end of a fibre - it's been squashed to 8um (9um), ergo will be concentrated and possibly cause sun spots
