Stakeholders are individuals or groups that have an interest or stake in the outcomes of a farming system. They can be directly involved in the production, processing, distribution, or consumption of agricultural products, or indirectly affected by the environmental, social, or economic consequences of farming activities. Some examples of stakeholders are farmers, farm workers, consumers, retailers, processors, regulators, researchers, NGOs, and local communities.

Stakeholders face various challenges when it comes to sustainable farming practices, such as diverse interests, values, and expectations among different stakeholders; a lack of access to information, resources, markets, or technologies; trade-offs and uncertainties associated with the environmental, social, or economic impacts of farming decisions; barriers to communication, participation, or collaboration among stakeholders; and power imbalances or inequalities that affect their influence or representation.

3 Stakeholders opportunities

Despite the challenges, stakeholders also have opportunities to promote and adopt sustainable farming practices. These include having shared vision and goals that align with the principles of sustainability, mutual learning and innovation, partnerships and networks, incentives and rewards, as well as empowerment and accountability. This can facilitate the exchange of knowledge, skills, and experiences among stakeholders; enhance coordination, cooperation, and trust; motivate and recognize efforts; and enable stakeholders to have a voice in decision-making and monitoring processes.

To illustrate how stakeholders can play a role in sustainable farming practices, here are some examples from different contexts. In Kenya, a coalition of farmers, researchers, NGOs, and government agencies developed and implemented a participatory approach to soil fertility management, resulting in improved crop yields, incomes, and environmental quality. In Brazil, a network of consumers, retailers, processors, and certifiers established and promoted a fair trade and organic coffee certification scheme, which increased market access, prices, and social benefits for smallholder farmers. Additionally, in Australia a group of local communities, landowners, and conservationists collaborated and negotiated a land use plan that balanced the interests of agriculture, tourism, and biodiversity conservation.
