What role should student feedback play in shaping educational reform?

As a student myself, I believe that student voice is crucial in shaping educational reform for several reasons such as: -Student-centered learning: Incorporating student feedback ensures that educational reform prioritizes learners' needs and perspectives, promoting a more student-centered approach to education. -Empowerment: Giving students a voice in the decision-making process empowers us to take ownership of our education, fostering a sense of responsibility and motivation. -Continuous improvement: By actively seeking and responding to student feedback, educators and policymakers can create a culture of continuous improvement in our schools, leading to more effective and impactful educational practices.

Student voice needs to be decoupled from the management agenda to find evidence of its own effectiveness, and from measurement of teachers’ performance. These skew both process and outcomes such that the information and ideas gathered are unhelpful for improving the learning experience.

An example would be the Labour party’s inclusion in its draft program for a first term of government of the Climate Education Bill which was created by students. This kind of feedback/consultation process needs to engage deeply. Surveys are ineffective because young people need time, space and support to think through big issues. Educational reformers can look to the education campaigns young people are already engaging with (like Teach the Future in the example above), or design consultation processes which help students to go well beyond the framing of education they’ve experienced to imagine better.

Student feedback is a powerful catalyst for transformative educational reform, driving the empowerment effect. By actively seeking and incorporating students' insights, educators can create more responsive and effective learning environments. This practice not only improves educational strategies but also empowers students, giving them a voice in their education. When students see their feedback lead to tangible changes, it fosters a sense of ownership and engagement. This collaborative approach ensures reforms are aligned with actual needs, promoting an inclusive and dynamic education system where every learner feels valued and heard.

I’m slightly sceptical about the timescales here. Genuine educational reform which is not just tinkering takes several years to consult, design and implement. The students you consult will be at a very different stage of their education, or adults, by the time meaningful reforms are implemented. However, feedback about what was learned from consultation, and how reforms are shaping up might give students the sense that they are heard. I will also inevitably have the opposite effect on those whose views are not carried forward into policy.

Imagine a school system where reforms are implemented without student input—policies might miss the mark, leaving students disengaged. Actively involving students provides real-time insights into what works and what doesn't. When students share their experiences, educators can identify and address unforeseen challenges quickly. This engagement ensures that reforms are practical and impactful, creating a more responsive and effective educational system. Embracing student feedback not only enhances learning outcomes but also empowers students, making them active participants in their education.

“Reform” implies something fundamental. If the overarching ethos, goals and outcomes of the education system are not responsive to our rapidly changing world, then nothing is really reformed. The climate and nature crisis and AI alone demand very fundamental reforms.

Empowering students to shape their own education can transform our schools. As educational leaders, we must recognize the critical role student feedback plays in shaping educational reform. By actively seeking and valuing their input, we gain firsthand insights into the effectiveness of our teaching methods, curricula, and policies. This feedback allows us to make informed adjustments that better meet students' needs. When students see their voices driving change, they feel more invested in their education. Engaging students in this way fosters a collaborative and dynamic learning environment, ensuring reforms are relevant, effective, and inclusive, ultimately leading to a more successful educational system.
