What is the role of restorative justice in promoting positive relationships and conflict resolution?

It takes a village to address restorative justice by promoting positive relationships. Cities need to partner with school districts, teachers and students to create programs like Restorative Practices Initiatives. These programs could be implemented in school discipline practices also called positive discipline, responsive classrooms, or empowerment focus on fostering a sense of community within classrooms to prevent conflict, and on reacting to misconduct by encouraging students to accept responsibility and rebuild relationships. There are restorative practices that schools use to model restorative justice: community-building circles, norm setting, community circles, and restorative chats.

Restorative justice approach..... Restorative justice is an approach to conflict resolution and justice that focuses on repairing the harm caused by wrongdoing and promoting positive relationships. It seeks to involve all stakeholders, including the individuals who have been harmed, the individuals responsible for the harm, and the affected communities. By doing so, restorative justice aims to address the root causes of conflict, promote empathy and understanding, and foster healing and reconciliation.

Restorative justice, in its essence, is about mending, not just punishing. It's an ancient dance of healing circles and storytelling, woven into the fabric of many cultures, including those of Native Americans and Black communities. Restorative justice isn't always easy. It requires facing uncomfortable truths, confronting biases, and learning to listen with open hearts. But it offers a different path, one where healing and connection replace cycles of punishment and alienation. It's a reminder that even the smallest ripples can be soothed, and that justice can bloom in the most unexpected places.

As a Black woman educator passionate about culturally relevant teaching, especially in Math and STEM fields, I see restorative justice as a powerful tool for building inclusive, healing learning environments. It's not just about discipline, it's about mending the ripples caused by misunderstandings, microaggressions, and historical injustices that can sometimes seep into the classroom. Remember, restorative justice is a journey, not a destination. It takes time, patience, and a willingness to learn and grow together. As educators, we have the power to heal the ripples, not just in classrooms, but in the hearts and minds of our students.

Restorative justice highlights our humanity. It shows the oneness that lives within us all. As more places adopt a restorative justice approach, the more people will be moved to take accountability. To be seen and labeled as someone who is an offender or violator labels the person directly. It doesn’t create space for change, or separating the action and behavior from the person.

Restorative justice emphasizes personal accountability and responsibility for one's actions. It encourages individuals who have caused harm to take ownership of their behavior and its consequences. By acknowledging and accepting responsibility, offenders can gain a deeper understanding of the impact of their actions on others and the community. This recognition often leads to a greater commitment to change and make amends.

I'm passionate about equipping future teachers with tools like restorative justice to create equitable and healing learning environments, especially in higher education. Education isn't just about acquiring knowledge; it's about developing empathy and social responsibility. Restorative justice provides a framework for preservice educators to develop skills in conflict resolution, communication, and restorative practices.

Restorative justice fosters a sense of community within a class. It allows students to feel free to share their feelings with each other in a healthy way, leading to better outcomes overall.

They can hear how their actions were perceived by the other person without being blamed, but being held accountable. Students share the responsibility of finding a solution that all parties can agree with.

This empowerment helps restore their sense of agency and dignity, fostering positive relationships and reducing the likelihood of revenge or further harm.

A common challenge is the incorrect belief that restorative justice does not include consequences, or that the consequences are inadequate. As a result, some schools become too permissive when attempting to implement a restorative Justice approach to their discipline systems. Teachers and school administrators need ongoing development in order to help folks understand and troubleshoot the different scenarios that arise at school. For most of us, real restorative justice implementation requires some unlearning and rethinking. It also requires significant transparency between schools, faculty, and families so that everyone trusts the process. The minute any part of the process becomes murky, it impacts whether or not it can be successful.

The biggest challenge I found to restorative justice was time. When it is just one adult and 18+ children, it’s hard to have restorative circles for the vast majority of cases. Most administrators are not comfortable with getting off track academically in order to do a restorative circle.

It focuses on addressing the emotional and psychological needs of individuals who have been harmed, as well as the needs of the responsible parties. By providing opportunities for dialogue, acknowledgment, and repair, restorative justice aims to promote healing and reconciliation within communities, fostering long-term positive relationships.

This community involvement strengthens social bonds, builds a sense of belonging, and promotes a culture of cooperation and support. Overall, restorative justice offers an alternative approach to traditional punitive justice systems by prioritising relationship-building, empathy, and healing. By addressing the underlying causes of conflict and promoting positive relationships, it contributes to more sustainable and meaningful resolutions while fostering a stronger sense of community.

It’s impossible for us to establish a restorative culture of inclusion and belonging in our classrooms if we’re quick to suspend or isolate our students every time they make a mistake. Our positionality as teachers deters students from holding us accountable when we harm them. Therefore, it’s important that we empower students to call us in when they feel harmed or unsafe. They must see that we’re imperfect and just as human as they are. Just like them, we’ll make mistakes. When we share the responsibility of repairing harm with our students, we not only shift the power dynamic to make our classrooms equitable, but we’re also reinforcing the idea that students must be active participants and co-curators of their educational experience.
