What is the role of iteration in the design thinking process for User Experience Design (UED)?

Iteration is fundamental in the design thinking process for UED. It allows designers to refine their ideas through feedback, testing, and refinement. Each iteration build upon the previous one, gradually improving the design to better meet user needs and goals. This iterative approach Forsters innovation, flexibility, and continuous improvement, ensuring that the final product delivers a seamless and delightful user experience.

This perspective now comes subjectively from a business perspective, because according to my own experience, the first goals come from a business perspective most of the time: The most important thing in Design Thinking is to first understand why we are doing something. What is the business goal we want to reach? After that, it's good to understand who are the most important stakeholder groups we have and whom is this product being done for. Once these are clear, it is good to start planning how to achieve customer understanding and how to reach the business goals set by the business through the customer's needs.

Design thinking is an approach to innovation and solving problems that is human centric and user centered. As said by Tim brown of ideo "The process of design thinking must consider technological possibilities, business success and needs of the people" In practice carrying out design thinking to solve real problems, i would typically try to understand the problem and the users i am solving the problem for, after empathizing with divergent sources, i converge to have the definite problem to solve, then i begin to ideate exploring divergent ideas before converging with specific solutions that can be prototyped to be tested with end users. I would typically loop back as much as is needed until an innovative human centred solution is acheived

Iteration in UED is like perfecting a recipe. Initially, you have a basic idea. Through trial, tasting, and feedback, you refine ingredients and techniques. Each attempt brings new insights, leading to adjustments: maybe more salt, less sugar, or a different cooking time. This process isn't about starting over but improving step by step. Similarly, in design, we start with a prototype, gather user feedback, identify issues, and make refinements. This cycle repeats, enhancing usability, aesthetics, and functionality. It's a journey of continuous improvement, aiming for a design that users not only accept but love. Just as the final dish evolves to perfection with each iteration, so does the design, becoming more user-centered.

Iteration can be used to average out different user behaviors and help optimise applications for greater audience. More the number of iterations indicates that's your design thinking process is exposed to a large audience subsequently your processes are optimised for a larger group.

I read somewhere that, "Your first idea is probably the worst idea". Be open to as many ideas as possible and keep iterating based on user feedback. It's important to engage with users throughout the design process to identify areas for improvement and iterate effectively.

I feel that iteration is important especially in those cases when the goal is functionality that is extremely important for the company, for example, buying products. If iteration is not done continuously, it is not possible to ensure that the functionality is easy, fast, and understandable for the user. In addition, if several promotional products are constantly coming for the product, it is good to constantly iterate them, so that you notice that the offers work for users and they increase the company's operating profit.

Using low-fidelity prototypes and mockups allows for quick and cost-effective testing of the design. Gathering feedback: Obtain feedback from users at each stage of the process. - Analyse feedback: Evaluate feedback to identify problems and opportunities for improvement. - Prioritise adjustments: Identify priority adjustments based on the objectives of each phase. - Rapid prototyping and user testing: Create prototypes adapted to the project phase and test them with users. - Or go straight to A/B testing: test solution hypotheses online to evaluate performance. - Evaluation and iteration: Analyse the results to guide the next iterations, while remaining aligned with the objectives of the current phase.

It can save time and money by avoiding costly and irreversible mistakes and rework, as well as improve the quality and performance of the design.

They encourage continuous improvement and incremental innovation, strengthening user engagement and loyalty. What's more, by proactively managing risk and optimising the user experience, we ensure the long-term success of our product in the marketplace.

To make the most of the iterative process, designers should implement rapid, focused iterations and be effective in filtering and prioritizing feedback. Maintaining enthusiasm and creativity throughout the iterative process is crucial, but so is knowing when to stop refining and move forward with the best possible solution.

I worked on designing a performance management system aimed at enhancing user engagement and simplifying the feedback process. Through iterative design, we focused on simplifying the interface and making feedback more intuitive. This change was challenging due to tight development timelines and the need to keep the project within scope, but it was crucial for improving user experience. After several iterations, including prototyping and testing, we noticed a significant increase in system usage and positive feedback. HR managers found the revised system more aligned with their needs, particularly appreciating the streamlined feedback process.

Iterative design approach means different things depends on where you are in the design cycle. During the initial research phase it can mean identifying the reoccurring patterns and adjusting the solution. During development phase this becomes all about hot potato approach vs waterfall, dev and design have to converse everyday to ensure the design (that is backed by research or data) is feasible. Iterative approach however, does not end when the product is shipped. It just becomes a bigger conversation this time with system users through user groups and in between release cycles to address all the gaps that only unveil themselves when a large group of users starts using the system in real time.

Everything you need to take with you can be summed up in one sentence "Every design is a prototype". Why? Simple, in UX design you must adapt to the current needs of the users. As we know, it is a constantly changing reality where the priorities or needs of today may not be the ones of tomorrow. Therefore, it is essential to adapt to these demands to provide an effective product that makes users' lives easier. This leads us to an iterative process of adaptation and continuous improvement, which will allow our proposals to remain on the table to meet current demands. A design is never really finished, that is why we iterate on it to improve the original proposal.
