Having a technical understanding of your software solution when selling complex packages can help you go deep on pain points and requirements. When you understand both the sales side and technical aspects of your deal, you are able to translate those pain points to your sales engineer and help focus the demo on how your platform solves those pain points with ease. You also garner more credibility from your technical buyers when you can demonstrate you know enough to "be dangerous" on your platform. Without technical expertise in software sales, you risk overlooking a detail that could make or break your deal simply because you didn't know to dig in further.

Running thru the history of your company and features not relevant to the prospect should be avoided. Be short and concise, repeat and summarise. Your presentation should address why you and why now.

What do we mean here? Negotiating a final ticket value, or the non-commercial terms like liability caps, indemnification, IP ownership and a hundred other areas. The salesperson needs to have a ferocious appetite to learn, because they need to bring together the two parties lawyers. It's impossible to do this without some expertise on the subject matter itself. I often refer to this as 'knowing enough to be dangerous'
