Emotional intelligence basics really gets down to this. You are human therefore you have emotions, and so does everyone else on your team, your consumers, and your stakeholders. Without developing skills in your own emotional intelligence and engaging with all different skills levels of humans with emotions around you. A leader is unable to effectively engage in any work with others.

This is where EI is vital. We can build empathy and display it, but to know what to do with the information our empathy is showing us? that is when things can get messy and overwhelming. Having emotional intelligence means knowing yourself and how you emotionally relate to the world around you first and foremost. Our emotions drive memory recall and choice of behaviour. If we only concentrate on empathy and the emotional state of others, we lose ourselves in that. I agree with this, the good choice of words, tone, body language all part of the message and also, do we not forget the fact of not saying anything but being entirely present and available.

I have also found that often resilience is seen as a key Charismatic leadership trait, because everyone loves the story of a winner, someone who has defied the odds to get where they have. Resilience is built by key Emotional Intelligence traits of developing optimism, having clarity of purpose & values, being flexible & adaptive, valuing & believing in oneself. In my opinion, one of the key barrier to Resilience is ones own insecurities and lack of identifying our true purpose and passion!

Leaders demonstrate resilience: -Communicating mistakes they make with humility and their willingness to repair and reverse the damage caused. -Showing that they are vulnerable and demonstrating how they overcome their vulnerabilities. -Managing their emotions, demonstrating that they know how to face situations, transmitting calm and composure. -Showing compassion for others by making personal sacrifices to improve the situation. -Founding a purpose to the adverse situation he is facing, giving meaning to the effort and sacrifice. Leaders also know how to convey that meaning to the team.

Charismatic leadership implies a leader who can “see further” than others, who knows best, who can “read” the needs of “followers” and who can communicate a vision to inspire and engage them. But what if the leader’s vision is incomplete or – worse – flawed? Chances are the followers won’t say anything for fear of getting offside with the leader. Does the leader have the EI capabilities to sense others might see things differently? Can the leader be sufficiently present with those others to create a psychologically safe space in which they can share? If the leader does tune into insights from the followers, can he/she build some of their contributions into the vision? Or, is it just to be the leader’s vision, no matter what?
