What is the role of data analysis in change management evaluation?

For monitoring the people side of change the data often comes from surveys, or polling of key stakeholders to gauge the success of the communication efforts, and to identify new communication opportunities or determine if the message needs to be tailored in some way. Our analysis needs to determine who will be affected, how we plan to reach them. First for awareness, and later to move them through knowledge about the change to being able to make the change. In this process we need to gather data to determine where we have champions, and where change isn't working as well. Armed with the data we can focus on gaining insight into what is working and what needs adjustment or changes to reach the target audience.

I like to see it all as a process to respond to key questions of the project. Am I getting the evolution I planned? The timeframe that the change took was adequate? For instance, if I'm seeking for an increase of innovation at a specific area, I have to set a measurable definition of innovation, measure it at the beginning and at some checkpoints of the process, and compare the metrics. Although the evolution of the change may have some standard metrics, seeing it as ways of responding to key questions makes it more result oriented.

My experience has shown that reliable data, with proper analysis and thorough administration, allow for evaluations of processes and project to be evidence based, which eliminates biases and reduces room for error.

Like one can easily see, it is very important to know your goals before the change. Often change is set to progress, but it isn′t a good idea to make changes just to change something. Data analytics works best in the "unknown/known" window - ie the raw data is out there, but needs to assimilated to give it richer meaning/context and derive second order effects of the data. But sometimes we do face black swan events (e.g. Covid) which doesnt have any data points in terms - therefore its import to model these scenarios too in our business plans, especially with the uncertain geopolitical environment that exists today.
