I’d like to offer the perspective that investments in general involve taking risks and that seeing “unsustainable investing” vs “sustainable investing” from a binary lens can be misleading. Sustainable investments also have inherent risks (and opportunities). Taking sustainable development considerations in investment decisions and aligning corporate vision is a strategy that should be taken, but I believe we can’t label a company or a portfolio “sustainable” just because it invests in renewable energy, for example, but turns a blind eye on scope 3 impact from minerals mining as part of that value chain. It’s a gradient; that’s why we have various ESG metrics to measure performance instead of a pass/fail.
