In my perspective asking about the project scope is invaluable in understanding the role, the team and the organization and ensure that you are a good fit for it. Would you like to join a project towards its inception or towards the final phase for the final calibrations? How many people are going to be involved into this project? And how many are going to be doing a role similar or identical to the one you are interviewing for? How will success of the project is going to be evaluated? There is no right or wrong answer, it depends on what is the preference of each candidate, but in any case this is the time to ask and learn more.

In my experience, asking about the project's scope and objectives is crucial when interviewing for a machine learning job. Understanding the business problem, desired outcomes, and stakeholders gives you clarity on your role and expectations. For instance, in a past project, inquiring about the end-users and their needs allowed us to tailor our solutions for better customer satisfaction. Need to critically evaluate whether there is an existing deployment strategy or it will be developed at a later stage. Previous indicators that might be good to consider is: What % of the models usually make it to production? For some companies it might be 90%+ but for some others less than 50%. Would there be any early pilot phase, which would be a critical checkpoint in continuing with the full deployment of the project? And what is going to happen if the results are not acceptable; would the project be cancelled and people made redundant or move to a similar role/department?

Moving on to the action plan! Ask, "What's your go-to deployment strategy, and how do you ensure scalability?" Did you know that 80% of machine learning models never make it to production? What are the "benefits" of this project and what is the trade-off that between value to the organization and consequences for the customers e.g. the machine learning project might try to optimize the conversion rates for a credit card; would vulnerable customers be protected? What about any related privacy issues? Is GDPR being considered and respected for EU citizens' data or/and could this be a potential blocker for specific elements of the model and the wider project? There might not be right and wrong answers, but some candidates might be more keen on working under certain ethical and privacy issues

Questions about the ethical implications of machine learning shows?the social and environmental effects of?work as well as awareness of the ethical responsibilities and problems that come with applying this technology. Some of the questions you can ask on this topic are: How do you identify and evaluate the potential harms and benefits of your machine learning project for different stakeholders? How do you ensure that your models respect the rights, preferences, and consent of the data subjects and users? How do you make your models and decisions interpretable, verifiable, and auditable? How do you reduce the misuse of your models and systems? And how do you contribute to the ethical discourse and regulation?

Even in a technical round, you want to discuss the project starting with the business impact, flow and then finally the technical details or the "how?"

One thing I've found helpful that doesn't fit into the previous sections is the importance of intellectual curiosity in a machine learning job. Technology and methodologies evolve rapidly, and maintaining a constant learning attitude can make a significant difference. For instance, staying updated on the latest algorithm advancements or exploring new data processing tools can greatly enhance innovation in projects. Moreover, fostering an environment where questions and experimentation are valued can lead to unexpected discoveries and creative solutions to complex problems. Curiosity not only enriches your technical knowledge but also enhances team collaboration and idea sharing.

Based on my experience one of the best questions would be: How do you approach selecting the most appropriate evaluation metrics for a machine learning model, especially when dealing with complex, multi-objective problems or imbalanced datasets?

You need to understand not only the technical aspects of the role but also its context within the team and the broader organization. A question I always recommend asking is, ‘Can you describe my role within the team’s structure and any expected interactions with other departments?’ This inquiry helps to gauge the level of multidisciplinary collaboration and the potential for impact beyond just the immediate team. Understanding the role’s place in the larger ecosystem can also highlight opportunities for growth and learning, and it ensures alignment with personal career goals and values.
