I do agree with this. The thermal paste protects the processor as it is always heating up. Without thermal paste, I do no know how processor's cooling down would be effective.

Think of it this way, if you zoomed in on either your processor or heatsink (the part of your CPU cooler that contacts the CPU directly) it wouldn't look completely smooth. In simple terms, think of a basketball and the tiny dots vs a soccer ball that is smooth. Since the space between these imperfections will be separated by air (and air is a very poor thermal conductor adding a very thin layer of thermal paste allows the heat to transfer between the CPU and the heatsink more efficiently. Following is my best known method on this: 1 - Clean the CPU surface and the heatsink using alcohol. 2 - Remove any residue using a lint-free piece of cloth (you don't want to leave any residue while trying to remove residue!) 3 - Pour a pea sized amount of thermal paste at the center of the CPU to avoid any spillage due to excess paste. 4 - Carefully place the heatsink atop the CPU and make sure the paste spreads evenly with the weight of the heatsink. You might want to tighten a little bit at a time circulating between the fasteners. 6 - Clean off any excess thermal paste visible around the edges. I agree but would add that you need to make sure there is no grease or other surface chemicals. Alcohol is not a degreaser so it is best used as the final cleaning agent, not the only one in many cases. I would suggest you want enough to completely connect the surfaces but no more. The purpose is to connect the surfaces and any extra will act as a heat agent which can retain heat so complete coverage with no excess is the best practice.
