What is the optimal frame rate and resolution for animated videos in video production?

Optimal frame rates for animated videos range from cinematic 24 fps to high-motion 60 fps. Resolutions like 1080p (Full HD) and 1440p (2K) suit online and television content. 2160p (4K) and 4320p (8K) provide high detail for professional productions. Choices depend on the platform, audience devices, file size, and editing capability. Balancing quality and compatibility is key for a professional animated video.

There is really no exact optimal frame rate for all animation videos. Some animation topics looks really good with more artistic approach of fever fps, even 20fps. But some animations looks really good with smooth 60fps. More luxury hand drawn frame-to-frame animation probably looks better with less fps, while simplistic animation style looks better with high fps. There are also other variables, but these are good examples.

Where lower file sizes are an important consideration - self-hosted HTML embedded video for example - you may want to consider rendering at a lower resolution and frame rate. You can sharpen and upscale lower-resolution footage using a range of emerging AI tools such as Topaz Video AI, CapCut and TensorPix. The benefit of working this way is shorter render times for your original 1920x1080 production (especially when you have deadlines to hit and your complex 3D animation is frazzling the GPU), with the option to upscale it at a later date as and when required.

While 24fps and 1920 x 1080 resolution maybe standard, its okay to have more frames-per-second. Some more dynamic moving animations just look better when motion is "smooth". This ofcourse depends on the idea, animation style and where video will be used. Most of the explainer videos we make are smooth 60fps, but it depends on various factors. 1920 x 1080 resolution is almost always necessity though.

I'm a 1920x1080 and 29.97 fps kind of guy, but let's just call it 30fps. If you've rendered out at 30fps but want to drop down to 24 or 25 for some reason, just apply a time stretch inside After Effects. Resolution wise, It's a little trickier converting from a 16:9 to a 9:16 - the aspect ratio of the vertical phone display - so keep that in mind when planning your production to ensure key footage fits inside the central view zone.

To estimate video file size pre-render using Adobe Media Encoder, click the preset field assigned to your queued item. You'll see the estimated file size at the bottom of the dialog box. To adjust the estimation to a suitable size, open the video tab and change the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate according to your preferences.

There's no clear and set rule on this as it depends on the animation style, where the final animation video is going to live (website homepage etc.,) and how it's planned to be used. Generally you're probably safe with a frame rate between 24-60fps and 1080p resolution but adjustments should be made depending on the aforementioned factors.
