What new technologies are changing UX design?

In the age of rapid AI Development, we must transform existing experiences and forge entirely fresh avenues for user-technology interaction. To improve voice interfaces, UX Designers must understand context and tone and prioritize accessibility and privacy, ensuring a smooth and secure user experience. The objective for us as UX Designers begins to expand beyond mere aesthetics. We must remain ever-watchful of the ever-evolving technologies, the dynamic market trends, and the profound societal changes caused by our innovative solutions.

Voice tech is cool and all, but here's the real scoop: it's not just about talking to our gadgets. It's about them understanding us – the real us, from every corner of the globe, with every accent, pitch, and unique voice. So, I've been chatting with ChatGPT using voice notes, and wow, it's smooth. But, the magic? It’s not just recognizing words. It’s "getting" what I mean, even if I have a random accent or a funky way of phrasing things. That's where the UX gold is, folks.

Voice and conversational interfaces will become more popular as our technology, AI, and the processing ability of systems become better. We can also look forward to more inclusive interfaces (people with disabilities for example). As UX designers our challenge becomes on how best to craft the messaging so that users are not left confused.

My recent implementations of Computer Vision and speech recognition technologies convince me that these two technologies are mature, and I look forward to the impact this will have in improving Human-Computer interactions. I believe we are going to see as much a disruption as Graphical User Interfaces were in the earlier ages of computing when the command line was the main medium of interacting with computers. User experience can now be modelled more closely to the natural human interactions of speech and contactless gestures. I hope every other UX designer out there is as excited as I am about these changing times....

Emerging technology like AR and VR for immersive experiences. VUI for voice interactions. AI for personalisation and prediction. 5G for faster, data-rich content. Wearables with unique UX considerations. Gesture controls in AR/VR challenge designers. So keep evolving current trends in this field.

For any designer wanting to get started with AR but doesn't have an idea where to begin, I'd highly recommend studying Google's AR design guidelines. They cover: - General guidelines - Environment - Experience size - Movement - Safety & comfort - Realism - Content placement - Content manipulation - Interaction (UX) - Ul elements I find myself relying on Big Tech's research on these topics because of the level of investment that has gone into the research. But I also combine this with talking to experts in the field + studying real-world products—highly recommend this combination!

What I find helpful about AR and VR is their ability to provide deeply immersive and interactive experiences. In my opinion, AR and VR don't inherently introduce new UX Design challenges. AR and VR offer incredible opportunities to create more intuitive and engaging interfaces. An example I've seen is how AR is used in educational apps to bring history and science lessons to life, making learning more engaging and memorable for students.

AR and VR introduce a new dimension to UX - a spatial one. This brings new paradigms for interaction, as the UX extends beyond screens to 3D environments. Designers need to consider factors such as user orientation in space, movement, and ways of interacting within a 3D context. This calls for a deep understanding of human perception and physical interaction in the real world.

Ever worn VR goggles or played with AR on your phone? Recently hyped by the Apple Vision OS launch? Spatial design! It's the future! For UX designers, AR and VR are game-changers. We're not just tapping screens; we're in whole new worlds. But with that coolness comes challenges: making it feel right, safe, and ethical. It's exciting, but we've got our work cut out for us!

AI is changing the way a user interacts with the applications. More and more intuitive features will be embedded across most software because of AI :)

That said, designers need to be careful and prioritise security, accuracy, and reliability because nobody likes surprises with their personal data.

Haptic feedback and gesture interfaces allow for more immersive and intuitive interactions, but they also require careful consideration of the user's physical capabilities and comfort. For example, prolonged use of gestures might lead to user fatigue, and the tactile feedback should be designed in a way that feels natural and meaningful to the user.

UX in Tactile feedback and gestures interactions or experience are crucial. These not only make experience look good but make them feel right. These feedbacks not only add a realism to the experience but also make users connected to the digital world. Overall It's not just about making a device vibrate, its to understand where, when and how to add tactile sensations to improve usability and meaning.

As UX designers, we gotta think about what's possible with this tech and how people will naturally use it. It's all about making things feel real, interactive, and easy for the user.

User Preferences: Tailoring interactions based on user preferences and expectations enhances satisfaction. These interfaces demand a nuanced approach to UX design, ensuring a balance between innovation and user-centricity.

Haptics can be used to convey emotion and states in your experiences. If you have a chat app: Want to let the user know their video failed to get sent? Two quick and consecutive vibrations do the trick. This signals that: 1. there's an urgent action to take (quickness) 2. something went wrong (consecutively quick vibrations) On the other hand—want to let them know their video sent successfully? One slightly longer, gentler vibration.

I spend 6 - 8 hours in Gen Ai everyday and teach corporate design teams how to use Ai for UX design. Yes, I'm a total Ai nerd. Here's some truths. 1. The proper psychological mindset is the most critical factor for success. 2. You HAVE to set up Ai properly for UX research & design work. 3. High quality UX research & design output is absolutely achievable. 4. Never use ChatGPT-3.5 for UXD. ALWAYS use ChatGPT-4. 5. Treat it like a being, not software. 6. If you think it's a superficial shortcut, you've lost before you've even started. 7. Ai is simultaneously both the teacher AND the pupil. If you conduct Ai UX techniques properly, you'll see firsthand why Ai makes designers indispensable. This is actually aging well, haha.

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence can optimize, systematize, and automate many processes. Nevertheless, I believe it's not feasible for ML and AI to entirely supplant human judgment and creativity in tasks that demand a human touch. Only the human mind can understand and solve problems of a higher order, such as those requiring deep empathy, moral reasoning, understanding of psychological aspects, or strategic features.

For (2), it's time for UX designers to see AI as more than just ChatGPT and chatbots. Take a dive into platforms like Hugging Face to see the full spectrum of ML tasks at our fingertips. Push yourself to figure out which models are behind AI features and critically evaluate if they truly make the human-AI partnership better. Right now, many AI products are tech-first; however, there’s a huge chance for UX to bring more value to both businesses and customers with practice of Human-First AI design.

Spending time within AI will make you believe and understand its immense potential and what it could bring in the coming years. In our team, we've also dived into AI and ML for UX. But here's the catch: it's not just about the tech. It's about how our users 'feel' and 'think' about it. Are they cool with AI making choices for them? It's crucial we strike a balance, ensuring our designs are ethical and truly add value. What’s tech without trust, right?

Web3 is at the forefront of this transformation. It's all about giving users the power, trust, security, and privacy they deserve. Our mission is to embrace privacy-centric design, where the principles of transparent data management and user control take center stage. These principles not only safeguard user data but also empower individuals to take charge of their information. Our designs serve as the bridge between technology and the user, providing the tools and interfaces necessary for individuals to make informed data decisions while retaining full control over their privacy settings.

As the technologies evolve, don't forget the people that are always left behind: the minorities who are never represented (basically everything that is not white, male, English and not-disabled) Build your models taking those people in consideration, but also with them. Do actual user testing with these minorities, who wear their name really badly since they are a majority now.

New technologies like AI are expanding and creating more opportunities and news ways to work for everyone, including UX. This won't change the foundation of UX design principles. We need to learn the landscape better and apply our common sense while working on the solutions. Our approach toward coming up with solutions, and explorations is changing and evolving. Our tools are representative of change. Coming from Visio, Omnigraffle to Axure to Sketch, Figma is showing the changing mental modal and expectations from designers.

Use all the new tools as your helping hand, your apprentice. If you rely solely on it, with no human touch, you're doing a terrible job and it will eventually backfire. The goal is to use the tools to speed up your process and then make it better with your unique magic.

Neuro-UI/Neurofeedback or Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs), while still in early stages, have the potential to revolutionize UX by allowing direct communication between the brain and devices. This is particularly appealing for accessibility by those with disabilities that impair or prevent their ability to interact with traditional input methods. Such technologies are already well on their way to being tested in humans with paralysis.
