What are the most promising career paths for corporate communications professionals?

In my opinion one of the most inclusive ways to learn all aspects of communications is to work in the non-profit industry. During my tenure as a communications professional with non profit organizations I wore many hats. I was responsible for drafting and issuing everything from press releases and media statements to news advisories and white papers. I promoted fundraisers and advocacy efforts. I worked on proactive and reactive outreach. I prepared speeches and speaking points for executives and volunteers alike. I learned a lot about crisis communication and media relations. The non-profit world taught me to work on a shoe string budget. It was the perfect launching pad for moving into private enterprise as a well rounded communicator.

Traditionally it would be the Chief Communications Officer but i am also starting to see a great leaning with HR and the need to also own culture conversations and change initiatives so i would say Chief Conversations Officer

My experience is from a decidedly corporate POV, though I've worked with many from varied backgrounds. I have no magic bullet for vertical ascendancy, but if your goal is effectiveness (ala Covey) & longevity when the cost-cutting initiatives inevitably come round, it can be "effective" to have a versatile skill set & a track record of providing value in multiple roles. Don't be a job jumper, switching every 6 months, but also consider other opportunities within Corp.Comm as they arise. I've been the employee newsletter editor, the media guy, the social media lead, done marcomm, advertising & a few I've forgotten! Also, don't neglect the operations & finance side of your larger business. Stretch those muscles for max versatility as well.
