What are the most important soft skills for an IS administrator?

Soft skills are essential for success in any field, and the role of an IS administrator is no exception. While technical expertise is crucial, it is the soft skills that set apart a competent IS administrator from an exceptional one. Firstly, effective communication skills are vital for an IS administrator. Secondly, problem-solving and critical thinking skills are paramount for an IS administrator. This involves thinking outside the box and being adaptable when faced with unexpected challenges. Furthermore, strong organizational skills are crucial for managing multiple tasks simultaneously. An IS administrator must prioritize assignments effectively and ensure deadlines are met without compromising quality or accuracy.

You are talking to technical and non-technical people. So you have to able to communicate needs and upcoming events to both groups. You need to be able to explain what you are needing or doing to other groups to coordinate activities. You also need to relay information to users so that they know what is happening or will happen.

One soft skill that has always come in handy for me is people skills. Finding a way to understand the most difficult person everyone speaks about will make you a superhero when providing services. Once you understand what that individual needs and what problems they have had with IS folks, you will be able to handle every other problem. IS folks are no longer in the corner office, you may be part of the team responsible for driving sales, so understanding your product and domain expert needs is also crucial.

At the LSE we also teach problem structuring techniques. Problems of information systems are often political and embedded in complex organisational and strategy concerns. To simply assume you easily understand the problem to which IS is the answer is often a huge mistake.

I will always think of one word that is "Empathy" Empathy is a key soft skill for IS Administrators, as it allows them to relate to the end users and understand their challenges and needs. This means putting oneself in the end user's shoes and feeling their emotions. This way, they can understand the user's perspective and offer better support and guidance so in other way Empathy helps to communicate better and provide appropriate solutions.

Be curios about the business you are supporting. Be curious about your colleagues. Learn something new and try to help out even if it is outside your domain. People remember people. Technology these days last less than people. Enjoy.
