Unfortunately, organisations are overly protected with liberal legislation that allows them to impose unruly sanctions on drivers that often stimulate a negative staff morale. This needs to change, and whilst I have no doubt, the “workers” cannot rule, the pendulum has swung too far the other way. Without doubt, managing a remote staff that are the driving team is very difficult but concern for the health and well being of the ones who actually “make you the money” is paramount. Regular one to ones with each driver should be a must and if this isnt possible, regular group therapy through team leaders should be key.

One of the things that have helped me in developing my skills while moving towards a transportation manager roll is education and knowledge of other departments that feed directly into the transportation department. Cross training with warehouse inbound and outbound,employees and management, have helped me in building stronger relationships between the two departments and also in making better decisions on how to manage my schedules and standard operating procedures.
