Udemy: Features affordable courses on video production and editing. YouTube Tutorials: There are countless tutorials covering every aspect of video production, from camera techniques to editing tips. Channels like Film Riot, DSLRguide, and Peter McKinnon offer valuable insights.

In America, we have local TV stations with a surplus of equipment and software that has been funded by taxpayer dollars. They are yours to use, so contact your local station and see about access to learn and produce your own content.

You already have the most important tool you need, and that is you. Hardware and software are just tools that turn your idea into a final product. Whether you're in front of or behind the camera, follow your ideas. It doesn't matter if you have the best camera or an ordinary smartphone. Test, try and learn.

For entry-level video production professionals, its very important to stay updated on industry trends, and connect with the community. For software I recommend DaVinci Resolve. There is a free version that is really a free version. It comes with the video editing, audio editing, color grading and vfx all in one. There are some things the free version does not have, but, you can do editing with it. Hardware is more about right pieces of hardware. I prefer to build my own computers but you can get some great prebuilt ones as well.

"The Filmmaker's Handbook" by Edward Pincus is probably the single most valuable educational resource for video production newbies. It's exhaustively comprehensive, easily accessible to a wide range of learners, and up-to-date on trends and tech.

Start shooting and editing as soon as possible. If you have personal drive and a true desire to learn, you will learn quickly from your mistakes. Find local video groups or others who have been doing this longer and spend time with them. Work for cheap to be around others who are better than you. You can learn a TON by watching others in real-world environments. I started learning by shooting PSAs about issues I was personally passionate about. Once you get good enough, start looking for commercials or promotional video opportunities. Once you get a decent reel together you can start looking for full-time gigs if that's what you want.

On the camera side: The Wandering DP YouTube channel. For editors: This Guy Edits YouTube channel. A wealth of knowledge. I learn something new every time I watch.

For aspiring documentary editors, I highly recommend Paddy Bird's "Inside the Edit" course. It's a fantastic starting point that dives deep into the craft. This is so very important - I would put it above all else. I have hired many people with and without experience after being impressed by them IN PERSON. Volunteer at industry or Guild events, work your butt off, show up on time, be polite and present, and stay off your phone! In hiring new people, producers and creatives are taking a huge risk that you will do what you say you will. That is mitigated if we have met you and created even the slightest rapport.

The importance of your spirit and attitude on shoots cannot be overstated. If you lack "people skills" start working on improving them now. As you are around and associate with others in the field, if you are good at what you do and people enjoy you being around, it will give you a lot of opportunities. Be humble...if you don't know what a pelican case is...or anything else for that matter...just say you don't know and ask. Far better than lying and making an idiot of yourself or, even worse, hurting the production itself.

It's extremely important to keep up with others in the industry, as this is a major source of help for any production. Staying on top of industry trends demands you pay attention to others in the space or get left behind.

Give this some time. Wait until you have some experience and decent imagery built up. Once you have a decently deep well of experience and footage to draw from, fire up a clean, simple website, add a reel, talk yourself up a little...not too much...and start putting yourself out there a bit. You should get a LinkedIn profile up and running and post somewhat consistently as well. I would also encourage you to apply for as many jobs as you have time for. It will help you craft your image and language to help you find the type of roles and opportunities that are a good fit for you.

I currently utilize Adobe Portfolio for my video editing showcase. While I initially explored online portfolio builders like Wix and Squarespace, I ultimately found their design options overwhelming for my needs. I believe in a minimalist approach, letting my work speak for itself through clean presentation.

Find a niche and evolve to it. As you begin to work in the business see what people need and then offer yourself as the solution.

You have to love the work. Or at least it sure helps in those times where your computer crashes or your camera malfunctions or your help doesn't show up on time. I will say, that I do love that you can always be learning in this field. There is always something you can get better at. If you learn acquisition and editing, it gives you a good balance between being in the office and being in the field.

Passion. Filmmaking is an art. You learn and improve and “see” how to edit or shoot movies by doing the work. I learned how to do videos with my iPhone to add to tools we use to communicate a research station where I work. I came to love it and work continually to improve my skills.

Creativity is is an engine that moves human fibers. It is sensory, intelligent, eye-catching . It is art that moves. It is something that in a person is innate but at the same time experienced and elaborated . To be able to detect it, more than knowledge, it is necessary to have a good eye to recognize it. You will need a good creative to succeed

Be specific when asking for feedback. "What could I do better?" is too vague and most people will struggle to answer. Instead, try "was the pacing too fast or too slow?", "did you struggle to understand any of the dialogue?", or "how did you feel at the end?". This helps people focus their thinking and feel less awkward about voicing criticism of your work. It also helps you be less defensive, because they're critiquing an aspect of your work, not the piece as a whole.

In production, directors and clients steer the ship, but feedback is a collaborative journey. We need to start with positive reinforcement, highlighting what works, then offer suggestions for improvement. Presenting multiple options with clear explanations of how each choice impacts the film is a great way to create a better experience for your client. I hired an intern from the Producers Guild of America because his interactions, work ethic, and overall self was positive, can-do, and respectful. He worked his ass off and I was impressed. It was his first job and I felt responsible for keeping him positive and on track to accelerate his career past my company. He is now a big-wig at Disney and I couldn't be prouder. It started with simple volunteering but he put his all into it in front of a huge group of producers that would notice his efforts.

In the UK, for far too long, the main entry requirements for working in TV production were: 'do you know someone working in TV who can give you a break', and 'is you family wealthy enough to support you doing unpaid work for a significant amount of time until you do get a break?' TV production companies get hundreds of emails a week asking for a break. My advice is always: 'be the person who stands out from the other hundred'. Go to them with great ideas for programmes and examples of films you've made your self - in the past this was almost impossible, but now video production is cheaper and easier. Finally, if you get an interview (or informal chat) make sure you've watched that producer's / company's output and have opinions about it.

In the film world, whether it is indie film, commercial production or large union sets - things change faster than you can say "action". Adaptability, critical thinking, and effective problem-solving as part of a team are often just as important as any formalized training. The ability to analyze situations critically and consider innovative solutions not only ensures the smooth progression of a project but also builds team resilience. Also ... don’t forget to have fun!

Be humble. Speak less and listen more. Impress people with your work ethic. Volunteer for shoots. Ask to sit in on screenings and edit sessions. Be thankful to those who show you the ropes. Don’t forget to pay it forward.

Be someone that people are excited to spend 8-12 hour days with and you'll get work. I look for fun people to work with before I consider their skill sets. The last thing I want is to get in a car at 6am with someone who's annoying me by noon and we still have 6 hours to go...
