If you want your organization to have a culture of security internally and externally, the people building your security framework and program need to be trusted within their professional communities. As an IAM professional, this can be self-serving as well. Not only do you want your security program to succeed, but you want to build relationships with other experts in your field so that if you need to "phone a friend" you have people to rely on. Given how quickly things change in our field, it can be very powerful to have additional experts in your corner. You'd be surprised how many people are willing to help you succeed - all you have to do is ask (politely) and offer your guidance in return.

To succeed, focus on networking skills like building relationships, socializing, and mentoring. Connect with IAM professionals within and outside your organization to exchange ideas and experiences. Seek advice and support from IAM experts and leaders. Mentor less experienced professionals, sharing your knowledge and best practices. In my experience, security professionals with IAM skills need to understand the design of any given solution, the purpose of the solution, and the need for permissions for the given solution. For example, If a professional is reviewing the software solution in GCP, they must understand the tech stack in GCP and evaluate the solution and its permissions with the given requirement. It will also help in communicating with the developers in their tech language.
