What are the most important product design questions for product management?

I believe a problem is a shared challenge experienced by multiple users, stemming from unmet needs that are crucial to them, and for which they are willing to pay for a solution. The key is to identify, and validate the same.

When defining the problem is important to distinguish between having a focus on the problem vs a focus on the solution. Having a focus on the solution means thinking about features. Having a focus on the problem means thinking about the value that will be delivered once the problem is solved. When defining the problem teams should focus on the problem and not the solution. In other words, focus on the value that will be delivered through the solution.

Defining the problem is like uncovering a shared challenge that users genuinely care about. It's not just about fixing issues; it's about addressing real needs. From my experience, viewing problems as opportunities has been a game-changer. It's a chance to innovate and create solutions that truly matter to users. The product design journey becomes a quest to unlock these opportunities, delivering meaningful solutions that resonate on a personal level.

Is the design technically feasible? In that has the design been evaluated from a technical perspective in terms of its relative complexity and the effort involved in building the design.

Key product design questions for product management include: What problem does the product solve? Who is the target audience? How does it differ from competitors? What are the core features and functionalities? How will the design enhance user experience? What are the technical feasibility and constraints? How will the design translate into a viable business model? How will the product evolve over time? How do we measure success and gather user feedback? These questions ensure alignment of design with user needs, business goals, and market trends.

When ideating solutions in product design, it's essential to ask: Have we explored a diverse range of ideas to address the user's needs, and are we pushing the boundaries of conventional thinking to foster innovation? In the realm of product management, the key question during solution ideation is: Are we prioritizing simplicity and user-centricity in our designs, ensuring that the proposed solutions elegantly align with both user expectations and business goals? For optimal product design, product managers must ask: Have we rigorously tested and iterated on our ideated solutions, and do we have a robust feedback loop in place to validate that our chosen path resonates with users and drives meaningful impact?

Not sure I dare to say but start from gut feeling and do what could be cool and then analyze, test and iterate from there. Again — Do, don’t overthink.

Think of Airbnb's MVP: "Our MVP is a simple online platform for renting out a spare room, providing affordable accommodation options for travelers." This focused on their core value proposition and addressed the most crucial need of their target users. Prioritizing ideas is key, just as Dropbox did by initially focusing on seamless file syncing, a fundamental need of their users, before adding more features. User feedback is crucial in this stage for refining the MVP. Instagram, for example, started as Burbn, a complex app with many features, but user feedback led them to focus solely on photo sharing. This iterative process, guided by user feedback and feasibility, is essential for crafting a product that resonates with your audience.

Market analysis is a detailed assessment of your business's target market and the competitive landscape within a specific industry. This analysis lets you project the success you can expect when you introduce your brand and its products to consumers within the market.

Conducting a detailed market analysis helps you understand the political, economical, socic cultural, Technological, Legal and Ecological factors which dictates the state of the market you’re trying to play in. This way you’re able to clearly to navigate the macro and micro factors of the ecosystem

Use the 3C Model (Company, Customers, Competitors) to analyze the market. Understand your company's capabilities, your customers' needs and behaviors, and your competitors' strategies. This comprehensive view helps in identifying gaps in the market that your product can fill.

In the Product design phase, this is the most exciting part inorder to validate your thought process one can do the following :- 1. Have a clear cut understanding of your own product journey 2. Map the product workflows with your closest competitors of your domain 2.1 Check their portals/website/app 2.2 Check their social media pages(Linkedin , facebook , medium) for feature mapping 2.3 Check the press release as well 3. Identify the potential product gaps and iterate on Why it is required 4. Converge the analysis with a low fidelity wireframe 5. Run a mock drill of UI/UX within your peer group to validate your analysis.

A user journey (or customer journey) is a scenario-based sequence of the steps that a user takes in order to accomplish a high-level goal with a company or product, usually across channels and over time. The underlying goal of a user journey is high-level.

In mapping the user and customer journey, delve into the persona, scenario, and flow. Picture your target user, their goals, and the path they take with your product. What does your customer value ? What kinds of Experience will she love? Their journey involves a "flow". Optimize this journey through visualizations, testing, and feedback. It's about creating an intuitive, seamless experience at every touchpoint, ensuring that each step in their journey not only meets but exceeds their expectations.

To craft a user journey, we need to think like a user. Not just one user, but sometimes several types and cohorts of users. So this beckons some good level of user research and discovery, including but not limited to user interviews. Ideally, the user journey should be optimised for the least number of clicks/steps towards the user goal and scenario, minimally viable.

Mapping out your user journeys also helps clearly understand and map out the ideal user experience and customer journeys for your product You will need to clearly define the User Personas, Motivations, Aspirations, Goals, Preferred Experiences and other details needed to build the most optimal User Journeys for your product

Perhaps the most critical product design questions to ask focus on your users. Who is your target user? Is the user the same person as the paying customer? What are the user's top pain points and experience frustrations? How will they interact with your product most often? What expectations will users bring to the experience that you may not be able to influence? These questions help you better understand your audience's needs, behaviors, and motivations. They help you identify what must be prioritized and why. Developing an intuitive product experience comes from deeply exploring these topics and should not be taken for granted. The best Product Managers know this and approach each product design problem with a fresh perspective.

Defining the business model is about crafting a story where value creation, customer connection, and financial sustainability are the protagonists. Identify who you're creating value for, how you're doing it, and how you’ll reach and maintain these relationships. Simply Frame it as, 'Our product serves [Who?] with [What Value?], reaching them via [How?], and fostering relationships through [Which experiences?]. The cost structure is [details by numbers], with revenue generated through [independent revenue streams].Validate profitability and sustainability with financial projections and benchmarks. It's more than numbers; it's about building a business that's as innovative in its model as it is in its product.

The business model feels like the last part to do, but it's important to get an idea of what it would look like and what it will require, because that could impact the solution you choose, or if the market makes sense at all. For example, you might not be able to come up with a business model that allows you to make a low cost solution.

A business model is a strategic plan of how a company will make money. The model describes the way a business will take its product, offer it to the market, and drive sales.

Defining a Sustainable Business Model ensures your product thrives through the product life cycle and eventually becomes profitable Models such as subscription, Product as a Service, Franchise, affiliate, etc ensure that you can get the most out of your business offering

Other opinion is to consider business model and mission before you even attempt finding the solution to the problem, to evaluate two things: 1. Does the problem/solution aligns with company's mission and strategy? 2. Is it a viable business proposition to solve this problem. For example, if TAM is low, until you are playing premium or niche, doesn't make sense.

A roadmap is a strategic plan that connects strategy to work and helps achieve goals. It includes the major steps or milestones needed to reach a goal or desired outcome. A roadmap can also be a communication tool that helps articulate the strategic thinking behind the goal and the plan to get there.

Measure everything possible! Anticipate customer behaviors; however, don’t be surprised when the data points to a future that no one anticipated. Continuous improvement is the best way to drive your product forward.

This is a good place to define your North Star Metric or choose that One Metric That Matters. Let it be the guiding Metric that truly shows that your user is getting the value from the product that is, you are truly solving the problem.

Develop a product roadmap guided by SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals. It should outline key milestones and timelines. Additionally, define key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the success of your product at each stage, ensuring that the product stays aligned with business objectives.

Some pointers according to me: 1) how complex is the design? It shouldn’t be giving too much information or less either. 2) is it in alignment with the user journey? 3) is it soothing to watch it?

The most crucial product design questions for product management revolve around understanding users, defining clear value, aligning with business goals, and ensuring feasibility. By focusing on these areas, product managers can guide the design process towards creating products that are user-centric, commercially viable, and technically sound. Remember to continually revisit these questions throughout the product lifecycle to ensure your design remains relevant and effective. This approach helps balance user needs, business objectives, and technical constraints, leading to successful product outcomes.

In my opinion, below mentioned questions needs to be asked: [1] What problem are you solving? One of the most common mistakes is to jump in and start designing things before you know exactly what problem you're solving for the user. [2] Who's your ideal user? [3] What do they want to do? [4] What do you want them to do?

Just as important as understanding the problem is understanding the user(s). While this article does mention the User Journey, it does not emphasize the importance of understanding your users (and their unique needs) before mapping out the journey. Great User Journeys are rarely one size fits all. Great design comes from great understanding.

When shaping a product, product managers must ask: Does our design align with the user's journey, ensuring a seamless and intuitive experience that resonates with their needs and expectations? Critical to successful product management is asking: Are we leveraging user feedback to iterate and refine our design, fostering a dynamic process that prioritizes continuous improvement and user satisfaction?
