I have been to many discussions - mainly with corporate VCs - about what should the timeframe be for the ROI. Expected returns in 1-3 years may be drastically different than for 7-10 years. Important to note the expectations for ROI on a phase-based approach as certain stages require more investment until you can get return (including marketing, development, etc)
While ROI is a crucial metric, it's important to contextualize it within the lifecycle of a startup. Early-stage startups might show a lower ROI initially but hold significant long-term potential. Conversely, a high ROI in the short term doesn't always guarantee sustained success. Consider the time horizon of the investment. Long-term investments in groundbreaking technologies or disruptive business models may take longer to mature but can yield substantial returns.

A well-diversified portfolio should have a balanced mix of investments that complement each other and match the VC firm's goals and capabilities.

Portfolio concentration is the degree of exposure to a single or a few investments in a VC portfolio. It reflects the confidence and conviction of a VC firm in its investment decisions, as well as the potential rewards and risks involved. Portfolio concentration can help increase the returns and influence of the portfolio, as well as foster deeper relationships and synergies with the investees. However, portfolio concentration can also increase the dependency and vulnerability of the portfolio, as well as limit the opportunities and perspectives of the VC firm.
Given the current funding environment, this list should probably include a metric looking at runway both at the company level and at the overall portfolio level. It could be months of runway, cash to monthly cost ratio. Looking at these ratios overall and company by company won’t help deliver the best returns but will have a defensive value. For those startups at the revenue stage and selling actual goods and not software (they still exist), changes in inventories and working capital requirements are also key metrics. Also many startups have recently taken on debt and tracking this is also key. In the last 10-15 years, VCs and investors in general have shifted away from these “health” metrics but they have suddenly become relevant again.
In current environment, DPI is probably the most important metric an LP would look at. Not sure why this is not included in the topics. DPI measures how much money actually returns to the hand of LPs, so it is the “ground truth” of investment result. Obviously for a new VC that hasn’t got the time to “realised” all their investment, DPI might not be a “fair” metric to measure their competence. But as time goes by, DPI is the only thing large institutional LPs actually remember and care about.
Those metrics do not fully capture the risk level - meaning if you invest in the health sector, there is a huge risk in the pre-FDA approval process and a huge upside in the long term. Other businesses may be less risky yet have less upside. It's important to balance the portfolio and capture how you're spreading (and measuring/mitigating/hedging) risk.
