What are the most important negotiation models for a conflict resolution specialist?

When the underlying need, want or desire is understood, then a solution that addresses it is easier to find. A much used example of this is a scenario where two people each want the only available orange. Neither can achieve their goals with only half the orange. There are no other oranges. Seems like a win or lose scenario. But is it? What if you learn that person A wants the orange because they need the juice and person B needs the rind? Suddenly the possibilities for a win-win solution open up. The hard part is getting people to be be open about their "why". There may be a sense of vulnerability that is keeping them from disclosing the reason they want, need or desire a particular outcome.

This perhaps is the most difficult forms of negotiation but the most impactful one. In order to do it in a way that ensures safety for all a deep level of trust and empathy must first be cultivated. From here the risk is minimized and the positive impact increases.

Overall, conflict does not always have a negative impact. 'Task conflict', for example, can actually help benefit a project/product. So long as it's done in moderation (& via respectful dialogue), task conflict can bring together differing perspective to enrich the final outcome. However, 'interpersonal conflict' rarely has a positive impact. Once the conflict becomes personal, it can have a detrimental impact on the project (as well as the team). So it's important to intervene in a proactive, steadfast manner - before the interpersonal conflict escalates.

The various models each may work well in various contexts. But none of the models matter at all if the parties are not using the same model - or do not recognize the nuanced or sometimes blunt differences in cultural (and experiential) perspectives. Do parties negotiate by increasingly small increments or by a series of near identical proffers? Do people bring in food? Are parties from an honor culture or a dignity culture? Is “face” important or not? In my experience, it is enormously important to take time to explore and understand not only their own but other parties’ styles, values and preferences.
