What are the most important metrics for evaluating proofreading quality?

I would disagree that the error rate is an objective metric for proofreading quality, unless you are referring to a post-proofread assessment (i.e., whether there are errors left after proofreading is performed). At the proofreading stage, the error rate depends much more on the initial quality of the text or material than on the proofreader's quality of work. A strong proofreader may very well find no errors in a text that's already well crafted, while a weak one may find an infinity of issues and yet offer wrong advice or miss other obvious errors. The quality of the final product and the usefulness of a proofreader's suggestions within the context of the material are much better standards to evaluate proofreading quality.

In evaluating the quality of proofreading, I focus on key indicators. Precision in language is paramount, examining grammar, spelling, and syntax for clarity. Consistency and fluidity are crucial, both within sentences and in the overall structure. I ensure terminological consistency, adhering to specific standards. Adhering to guidelines and adapting to the target audience are priorities, along with correcting residual errors. Client feedback integration guides my assessment, ensuring satisfaction and quality. Meeting deadlines while tracking modifications ensures a rigorous process.

Clarity of important points is the most important. It is mostly reasonably easy to check and write some thing that everyone understands, but writing something that every single person will understand the exact same and intended meaning is a whole different level. "Can you read it and derive another meaning" is the question.

Errors in reading Greek alphabet characters, for example alpha, symbol of infinity and another one for 'proportional to'. Typo errors like lower case p and 'rho'. Mixup in symbol of 'belongs to' & epsilon etc. and many more.

This is a much more accurate measure of proofreading quality. Moreover, before starting a job, a proofreader should always clarify what their client's expectations are. Is there specific terminology or are there standards that need to be taken into account? What is the deadline? Is speed more crucial than quality for this client? Are there any templated elements that must not be touched? Taking time beforehand to assess job requirements will increase the chances of a positive experience for the client. Then, of course, honest and thoughtful client feedback after the task is completed can provide valuable insight to help maintain and improve the proofreading quality for future engagements.

I've created a nearly full-proof proofreading strategy. Of course, first read it. Then read it outloud-you catch mistakes with how the document flows. Send it through grammarly. Then have AI read it to you to ensure you found all errors and the paper flows with no confusion, and you can not hear any redundacy when it's read to you.

Client feedback is often the most valuable metric, but it is often far from objective. An objectively clear, well written text may displease a client if they do not like the terminology, style used etc. In order for proofreading to be effective, and for feedback to work as a metric, both translator and proofreader must take into account the client's instructions, style used in similar texts and clarify any ambiguity.

In my experience it is important to communicate with clients about a realistic turnaround time. The time it takes to proofread efficiently will depend on the length and details of the project, and open dialogue about expectations is a must.

Delivering on time is surely important, but clarity around expectations (both in terms of quality and realistic turnaround times) is key before starting a job. In my experience, a proofreader should be transparent about their capacity to deliver and the level of work that is achievable within the expected deadline. A client may be flexible with their dates but have very high quality standards, while another may have a drop-dead delivery time and be comfortable with a high-level review with a light markup correcting only obvious/egregious errors. Agreeing on terms ahead of time helps avoid tense, anxious exchanges and ensures a positive client experience.

Turnaround time is subjective. A short blog can reasonably be expected to be done quicker than a PhD thesis. Manage expectations so that there is a deadline that is agreed and understood by all involved. If you can meet their expectations then that's great but at the very least, ensure that the deadline is one that you can actually meet. If their deadline is unrealistic for you, be honest about it and don't take the job.

Turnaround time can only realistically be estimated after the proofreader has scanned the text. As with all proofreading, the quality of the translation itself will often be the determining factor.

There is a need to be careful on relying too heavily on software in this regard. Although PerfectIt and Grammarly can be helpful, they are not perfect and can get basic elements wrong. They also try to uniformly apply tone and strip an author's voice. I have attempted integrating these into my checks. It adds time to your billable hours, you are often skipping suggestions that should not be applied, and words of art get missed by these AI tools. With that said, it has caught things that I have missed. It is a tool, not a final arbiter. You need a person there that understands the nuances of language. Creating custom dictionaries and tweaking settings can help. If you work on a variety of content, settings change according to the source.
