What are the most important lessons to learn in film production roles and responsibilities?

Please ensure that you are aware of your role and responsibilities, and remain focused on fulfilling them. It is crucial to exercise patience in all circumstances. Each film is a unique creation, with its own triumphs and challenges, progressing at its own pace. If every individual is proficient in their respective roles, eventually everything will harmonize like a finely tuned machine.

Know and understand your role in totality, not parts of it or an idea of what it might be, but the entirety of your role and responsibilities. Also understand that whatever you might be performing, it will have implications on other verticals too. Every single task you perform will have direct consequences on the over all quality of film production. If in doubt, ask your supervisor, do not assume anything on a film set. Work over the scenarios in your head but be open to change and flexibility to improvise based on external factors affecting the production. Lastly, keep your eyes and ears open and your mind awake. Observe what’s happening around you.

Get practice by working on an actual real film set and learn how to not pis* off a director! And focus and not talk about tech all the time.

1. Director: Learn to articulate your vision clearly to the team. Effective communication is key. Be decisive and confident in your decisions. Your team looks up to you for guidance. Foster a collaborative atmosphere. Respect and value inputs from your team. 2. Producer: Master the art of budgeting and scheduling. Understanding finances is crucial in production. Develop strong negotiation skills to secure deals for locations, equipment, and talent within budget constraints. Be prepared to handle unexpected challenges. Adaptability is key. 3. Screenwriter: Learn the fundamentals of storytelling. Understand character development, plot structure, and dialogue. Strive for unique and compelling narratives. Avoid clichés and predictable plots.

In my limited experience on a film set...it's all in the details. Nothing will derail a production faster than someone forgetting a responsibility. My roles have been as a Producer and I can tell you it's all about WHO you hire and the team you create. Make sure you research all team members past productions and be CLEAR about their roles. Another aspect is TIME. You have to respect the crew's time. You don't have a second to lose when it comes to making a film. You are chasing weather, light, schedules, resources and funding. I guess what I'm saying is you need to be on top of the details well in advance so you know how the day is going to go, the week or the month.

Wisdom is valuable. Many times you have to MacGyver your way through challenges that arise. Stay calm. As things heat up, remaining calm is super important. Collaborate. Never underestimate the abilities of your team mates. Use the experience of your team to overcome challenges.

Always have a plan B. And plan C. Speaking from a corporate perspective, you probably have a budget that a client has approved with the scope of work. Often the producer is also the director and the direct client contact unless the budget is over $100k. If things out of your control happen, keep the client apprised. More times than not the client will adjust the budget. If it’s your mistake, be prepared to eat the cost. While in preproduction conversations with the client, make them aware of the things that may affect the budget. Everyone in the production also needs to be flexible. A cameraperson or other technical crew should have spare equipment available should something fail. Hope for the best. Plan for the worst.

Preparation is key: things will always arise that will solely rely on your ability to PIVOT. Preparing for multiple scenarios is the best way to execute your vision or some version of it (oftentimes a better version or unforgettable experience) It will be incredibly stressful but watching a crucial moment play out on the big screen where you were forced to pivot are oftentimes the stories that define a piece of work.

The last thing I want to hear on set from one of my ACs or gaffer team is “I thought you said” so I like to be as clear as possible and leave nothing to chance when communicating. I go through what I have to say in my own head and I poke holes in my communication in order to improve it. It comes down to self awareness, it’ll make you a good communicator.

The major roles would include the director, producer, script supervisor, screenwriter, production manager, camera & lighting department, and Best Boy (who is popularly called Production Assistant/PA in the Nigerian film production scene) Each role requires specific skills such as clear communication, strong management, attention to detail, compelling writing, organization, technical knowledge, and teamwork. So, to be able to have mastery in any of the roles, practical experience is invaluable. This ultimately, always leads to successful completion of film projects.

Being open minded saves you a lot especially when you receive negative feedback. Those feedbacks will wheel you to improving your performance and productivity in the future or next project.

I would say time management is critical in every role. don't forget everyone is being paid for their time in one way or another. Even the kit you are using is being hired out in relation to the time you are using it for. So whatever you do, don't delay things because of your errors (wherever possible). Always be punctual and always work as part of the collaborative whole.

Depending on the size of the production, a good degree of humility is required. If you are starting out on a large studio production, you may be at bottom of the pecking order. You won't be there forever so learn as much as you can and make friends -These are the guys who will remember you on the next show. So use your head, be reliable and be on time. Interviews - being filmed is a weird experience. People get tongue tied, self conscious or start rambling. Academics tend to go into way too much detail; so say "ooh interesting, so to synthesize would you say ABC..." Always get them to reply in a full sentence. People who get scared need to hear they are doing a normal thing in an abnormal environment. Be Kind; be patient.
