1/ Always assume the worst, and then start working from there. You'll never be wrong, because there's nothing worse than the worst. 2/ Find the lowest-hanging fruit, and prioritize them. For example; it never cease to amaze me how many consultants and companies which hasn't utilized security key yet - despite how easy it is + how powerful it is against multiple attack vectors. 3/ Monitor everything - then optimize your monitoring scheme, so you won't be overloaded by false-positives (bad) and become numb to the warnings (really bad)

There are so many SIEM tools, several good free ones, even the smallest business can put something in place. Ideally though you need someone looking at it who knows what to look for, if you are a small firm it can be worth the expense of out sourcing to a specialist to give you confidence that things are picked up. I have seen incidents that could have been prevented if this had been done, but they could have also been prevented if MFA/2FA was used or other security measures in place.

You may not use it for months, but when there is an outage and all means to bring Operations back to normal fails, this solution is a life saver. To me the most important thing is monitoring, if you can't see what is happening on your environment then you will have outages for stupid things like a full disk or stopped service. The more you know about what's happening, the more you can get in front of things. Knowing your UPS has a fault or that the cluster has a dead disk is essential and you should get alerts from something for this! Weird that who ever setup this article did not put this under any of the headings other than security, these days we talk about SIEM and putting all our logs there to give us security, but the logs may also show errors that indicate other problems. Monitoring your systems is about more than just keeping them secure.
