It is key to define how the data gaps will be addressed. While "background processes" could be addressed through inventory databases, foreground processes should be studied based on primary data (direct measurements) or secondary sources (that may include reports, handbooks or academic literature). There's an additional challenge when conducting LCAs of new technologies, so not many previous studies are available and the data may be scattered and hard to couple. In these situations, the researcher conducting the LCA has to think strategically about the best way to address these gaps, and be transparent about it, ideally performing and publishing a Data Quality Review (for instance, following the Product Environmental Footprint guidelines).

Two additional considerations for LCAs: 1. Controls and assurance are a key aspect of LCA that require alignment on methodology and validation of data accuracy. 2. Advocacy is another key pillar to support LCAs, especially as methodologies are defined for complex sectors and value chains. Engaging appropriate standard-setting bodies, NGOs, etc. is the secret key to success.
